Built Ford tough

Sometimes I've found myself lamenting the decision I made to buy a Focus. I think of how much easier the steering is on a lesser vehicle. Or how much easier the doors are to open and shut on a kia. But it's times like today when I was hit from behind while waiting to turn into a driveway, that I'm glad I did. The girl's Escort was damaged bad enough that she could not drive it. It took several rescue persons to push the car off of the road. Damage to my car? Minimal scrapes on the bumper. Small chunk of plastic the size of a quarter chipped out. The paramedics on the scene couldn't believe it. They said "That Focus sure is durable". I said, "yes it's built like a truck!" It just proves that it's not necessary to buy an SUV to have a safe vehicle. And, this car gets gas mileage in the 30's to boot. I just hope those idiots in Congress and the White House don't get really stupid with gas mileage requirements, because that would probably diminish the durability of the future cars.

Awesome, all you have to do is fix/replace your bumper while she's got to get a whole new damn car! Lol. I love the Focus...

Don't get too smug.......should you crash your Focus into the rear of something or other, you'll be the one getting towed. And the other vehicle will suffer only minor damage.

At least the Focus doesn't catch on fire when hit from the rear, like some earlier small Ford cars. "Built Ford tough"? It's a marketing slogan, created by a pencil pusher.

Pintos and Mustang II's had that problem. I think recently there was a recall on police edition Crown Vics where a bolt in the rear could penetrate the metal gas tank, possibly creating a spark when it did it and setting the tank on fire.

I like manufacturers who at least admit when they make mistakes. I have a friend who's wife had a 2002 Civic Si, her brake rotor shattered while she was driving causing her to run off the road into a ditch. Honda made no attempt to reconcile and my friend ended up paying for what the insurance wouldn't cover on the car. He got some money for parts, but not enough. Yay Japanese manufacturers, they're the best.

Some of those Pinto/fire videos from the past were horrible. It did take Ford too long to fix that problem......

Normally, that would be my first thought. But these were experienced paramedics who have seen lots of accidents. If it surprised them, then there is definitely something to it. And, I shopped around test drove, and rented several comparable cars from different mfrs. like Toyota, Honda and Kia. I can tell you they are chincy compared to the Focus. I know it's a marketing slogan, but it's true in this case. Since you are quite fond of slogans, I'll give you another one: "Quality is job 1"

I've been rear ended twice
Still on original bumper and paintjob

There was a scuff mark from the first one and the second was the worst of the 2 and that put a small chip in the lower center of the bumper. The scuff mark was buffed out and paid for by the driver, I didn't get anything for the 2nd one.. as there was no visible damage at all until eventually I found a thing about the size of a pinhole.
Poor guy smashed up his car though, I guess that's enough to satisfy me
