GM's Most Disturbing Crash-Test Videos

My God...

(1) It's amazing our parents survived to have us;

(2) These prove that the Chinese might actually be able to make "safe" cars in, say, another 40 years;

(3) It must have really sucked to be a highway-accident-response EMT back in the day (I mean, more than it does now).

PS. Major props if you "get" the reference of the thread title (no, it's not "America's Funniest Home Videos")...

i dunno... i kinda like the convenience of having me and my family thrown out of the vehicle in side impact crashes. i mean, we're going to get out anyway, so why not let the car do some of the work! undo the seatbelt, then open the door, then pull people out... thats so lame. this car does all of that in one fluid motion!!!

holy crap! you must remember that it was Ford who said "safety doesn't sell;" Even foreign automakers' crash tests were worse than this back then.

Those are insane.

Makes me think about all the times I complain about how new cars are advancing too much.

For what its worth, most of the cars depicted are way earlier than 1968... and are Chryslers. At the very end, two mid-sixties Ford sedans collide... they are also most definitely pre-1968.

As for #3 in the OP... I think the main part of the EMT response back then was to pick up the bodies and clean up the mess. Even if someone survived the equipment most ambulances had would not do much for you. (In rural parts of the country the local hearse doubled as the "ambulance", what does that tell you?)

Also reminds me of my college mates that bragged they could drive their '64 Falcon into a telephone poll and not bend the bumper... and my reply was that the energy of the crash went someplace - leaving the fire department to hose them out of the inside.
Me? I'll take crumple zones and totaled cars, as long as you can walk away you can get another car....

Noticed that, too (the age of the cars, not the makes).

Whatever. Let's raise a toast to Ralph Nader.
