What happens when you do this ?

A buddy of mine recently connected his battery backwards ... + to - and - to plus

his car doesn't start anymore....what could have happened ?

he drives a civic...go figure haha .... i dont take car advice from him

do cars have a main fuse or circuit breaker like on a house ? Did he fry his electrical system ?

in many cars, this will fry the ECU.

how hard is it to connect red to red and black to black?

He most likely blew every fuse in his car and his ECU if he is that unlucky. Start by replacing fuses and then work up to relays if that fails try the ECU.

I worked in an install bay for a long time and have seen this happen twice, one on a honda once on a Lexus.

Both cars lost the BCM's, all fuses, all relays

My dad did this on his f150. All it did was blow the radio fuse. Built Ford tough!

well what happened was that his dad had taken out the battery, then put it back the wrong way (flipped it)

my friend did not notice this and reconnected everything with the battery turned the wrong way... the civic battery is about half of the size of the battery in my fofo so i can see how the cables could be connected the wrong way more easily on the honda

he told me that he had checked all the fuses he could find and they were fine, but the car still wouldn't start. ill tell him what you guys said about the ECU...

talk about being unlucky. he just had his motor replaced. driver fault. i was with him when he did it. i don't know what happened but the piston was hitting the head if the engine revved over 3500 rpm...the mechanic said he thought that he bent the crank (he didn't look inside though) it was the result of driving at triple digit speeds for about 24 miles on a closed circuit of course....that Honda motor was a marvel actually for taking 30k miles of his abuse.

i will show him this thread so that he can see what i mean when i tell him how great this forum is....you guys are not only focus guys but car guys and thats why i stop by everyday to see whats new

One more thing that he should have discovered at being odd, the battery posts are two different sizes (unless it is a side mount battery) He probably found it strange that he had to expand the negative cable and tighten the positive cable more.

Sorry, even I never did this, even when I started getting my hands dirty at the ripe ole age of ten. He should have realized that something was different.

I think it would blow everything that draws power when the key isn't in the ignition. So figure out what takes power when its off.
