EcoBoost engine standard in 2011 Focus?

I've read that there will be 2 different versions of the 1.6 liter EcoBoost engine slated for the upcoming all new 2011 Focus: 148 hp version and a 178 hp version. What I'm wondering is will the 148 hp 1.6 liter Ecoboost be in the base model Focus or are the Ecoboost engines supposed to be optional engines? Will the lower trim level 2011 Focus' receive non-Ecoboost engines. I know Ford has developed these new engines to meet future strict EPA fuel economy and emissions standards. They are turbocharged with direct injection.

I've read a few articles where Derrick Kuzak of Ford has stated that buying a car with the Ecoboost engine will pay for itself in 2.5 to 3 years versus buying a hybrid car which would take much longer to pay for itself. Is he implying that the EcoBoost equipped Focus' are going to cost a lot more money? If anyone has any clarification on this please share if you are able.

I don't know a whole lot about turbocharged engines. Are turbocharged engines reliable? Can they last as long as a non-turbocharged engine? Is there additional maintenance required with a turbocharged engine?

I doubt any ecoboost engine will be the standard engine. Ecoboost structure is designed to make for example... V8 power with V6 fuel economy and emissions. It will most likely, almost guarentee be the top of the line engine option.

^^^ agreed. I doubt that Ford will put an ecoboost engine in the focus at all..... It would be great, but I don't think they'll do it.

But yea, they'll keep the duratec as standard if they do decide to use ecoboost in some model. It would be too expensive for ford to put turboed engines in the whole line of foci's, and it wouldn't be very practical either...

if tuned correctly and F/I car or truck can be just as reliable. Got to remember the fact that now there is something else to break under the hood which will be very expensive to replace. VW and Audi have been using turbos for a long time now and their cars are very reliable.

Here's an article that states by the end of 2010 nearly all of Ford's North American engines will be upgraded or replaced. Another article states that by the end of 2013 90% of Ford's N.A. engine line up will be EcoBoost. Auto Express says that Ford is also offering lower horsepower 1.0 and 1.4 liter EcoBoost engines in Europe. Maybe one of these will be used for the 2011 base U.S. Focus.

Every engine will be turboed in the next 5-10 years. BMW is already half way there, even the new M cars will be turbos for the first time. Fiat is started to move their small engines to turbos (1.4L and smaller). Forced aspiration is the only way to gain the higher efficiency demanded by EU and US regs for emissions and fuel economy.

As for reliability, turbos have been as reliable as NA for 15-20 years. They are novelties here, but remember nearly all the Japanese Kei cars have been turbos. This technology is very mature in the global sense.

I'm betting that Ford introduces the turbo as an option to start. They might as well use it for marketing while they can.

Maybe for the larger cars... But the little engines are already all pretty much pzev and get super good fuel economy. They are alreadt beating mandations few years down the road. I see current V6's getting ecoboost 4cyl, and V8's getting ecoboost V6's. Remember the shape the companies are in, theyre gonna cost cut as much as they can. Cant see all Ford engines becoming ecoboost... That will never happen.

turbo'd engines are way better!!! the use wasted energy. w/ turbo'd direct injection motors, then the efficiency goes WAYYYY up!! they can use smaller displacement motors to make the same hp and get better gas mileage. they last just as long as stated above. I've personally seen a turbo'd Euro focus riding in detroit w/ all the camo on it as it was a prototype, i'm pretty sure it was the 2010 focus. The ecoboost line is one of the best idea's that ford has had in a while. it WILL come out, and they will be in most smaller to midsize cars.

I do ford catalyst testing for engines a few years down the road... We've teste tons of 3.5L ecoboost catalysts, and a handfull of 4 cylinder ones. Cost goes up.. Big time with the injectors they use alone, which retail each more the $1000. I see prototype vehicles almost everyday because of my drive between Dearborn and Wixom.... I also see prototype materials. I agree the ecoboost engine is superior.. Direct injection alone is a major differance. Look at the CTS/Camero 3.6L... thats an amazing engine. Anyway, that hardware costs alot more the a regular 4cyl, that still gets more then the mandated epa mpg, and passes emissions. What i'm saying is theyre not going to spend the time and money unless they have to...which they dont because theyre little engines are so efficient.

Actually EcoBoost makes the most sense in the volume sectors, like the Focus, Fusion and upcoming Fiesta.
Volume=Affordability

Also remember Fords targeted vehicle weight reductions will range from 250 to 750 pounds, depending on the segment . Substantial vehicle weight reductions will enable Ford to use smaller displacement engines that provide secondary efficiencies, such as lighter chassis and suspension components.

If one puts all the pieces of Fords future puzzle together,how can you say you will not see EcoBoost in Fords small cars. Now that just doesn't make sense.
