Powering my GPS

I just bought myself a GPS and I love it!

However, remembering to unplug it when I get out my car is annoying, since the cigarette light power source in the ford focus is always powered.

I really want to be able to just power it direct so I don't have to use op my cigarette lighter power source.

I was thinking that I can just tap directly into the fuse panel or something like that. I'm sure that someone on here has done something similar to this before.

Any help would be awesome!

Go to the parts store and get an Add a circuit, and a second 12v cigarette lighter, wire it in and store it in the cd holder door under the steering wheel, you can then route the wire from the cd holder to the gps thru the paneling for a hidden wire, i have my radar detector wired like this and when i get time i'm going to do my gps the same way.

Look thru the owners manual for a fuse socket that is suitable, I used the heated seats circuit i believe, that way it only has power when the car is on.

thanks pistolgripbmx! going to autozone right now! rep point for ya!

one more question for ya...how do you actually connect it to the fuse box? silly question, I know...I just want to make sure I do it right so I don't have any problems with it down the road.

the add a circuit is basically a fuse, that allows you to tap into the fuse box, and also allows you to plug in another fuse. you will have to run the power wire from the new 12v plug to the power on the add a circuit, and then ground the negative from the 12v plug somewhere. there are a few bolts you can remove that hold the fuse box in and ground it to one of those bolts, i'll go out and take a picture of my setup in one second.

shouldnt actually be in the fuse box. the ones we use at work are nice they have 3 wires a ground a 12 volt battery and the ignition. that way it only works when the key is turned :) you could just wire it in using your plug now too if you want.

There are a few ways you can do it, i like the add a circuit and 12V plug for a few reason. You can use it for other accessories if needed (after you check to make sure the fuse is the right rating) you don't have to worry about cutting into any wiring at all not in the car or on the accessories you are wiring. just splice the add a circuit to the 12v plug and ground it out.
