17. Cars With Manual Shifts

Im SAD :-(

17. Cars With Manual Shifts

It's hard to find a manual transmission these days. In 1980, J.D. Powers and Associates estimates that more than 35 percent of all cars sold had a stick shift. By 2005, that number had dropped to 6 percent. Four years later, finding a car with a manual transmission is a big challenge -- you have to go either high end or very low end. 2008 was the last year that any manufacturer of full-size trucks offered a manual transmission.

Really is difficult finding one. Unless you go NEW and foreign. most american cars you CANNOT buy in a standard. and they wonder why they need help. my generation ~30 and below (i'm 24) prefer standard over autos. I drove a manual once and never looked back, been driving it ever since. America is getting Lazy. In europe you can buy MINI-VANS with standard transmissions.

I currently drive an '01 Focus Zx3 via a 5-speed gearbox. as the article says

automatic transmissions were for wimps
and they still are.

What about paddle shifters?

They provide better performance than manual...

true, but longevity is sometimes an issue with automatics, a 30k+ cars have decent transmission, overall automatics have come a long way and do last, but in certain applications they suck, esp in cars under 25k

bobs right, automatics can shift faster then sticks now a days in sportier cars

i happen to love my automatic

my jeep would be the biggest pita to drive a standard on. a focus is a different story, i enjoyed teh turtle in a manual. but its hard to have kids in cars with manuals. its a convenience thing.

Drive in Toronto traffic for a couple weeks and we'll see if you still like your manual :P
I love manual, but I got automatic for convinience reasons. Plus, my gf can drive the car when I'm drunk! How many times have you gotten stuck because the DD'er couldn't drive stick lol..

Don't call us wimps!

I love the stick in my focus as a non daily driver. When I am out crusing or looking to cause trouble the stick is my best friend.

however, I have a automatic mini van that I drive on average 3-4 hours a day in traffic. Its great for that, but its not a fun car to drive anyways.

The 6 percent of american cars that have sticks, are the type of car you would want to have a stick in. Corvettes, Mustangs, Foci's, Neons, etc. The general public doesnt want a stick for there daily driver. its the select few enthuseist (sp?) like us who want one.
