Noob q: '00 SPI lacks power?

Hello all,

I'm seriously considering getting my first Focus, it's a 2000 LX SPI. I like the car but my concern is that I will be disappointed in the performance of the SPI engine. My current DD is a 190HP Jeep Cherokee and my last two cars were V6 Taurus SHOs (Yamaha 220HP engine). Granted, the fuel savings and practicality will be great, but can anyone put my fears to rest on this issue?

And I would prefer to keep my DD NA (naturally aspirated). :)

- Dan

do not get a fofo with an spi there are hardly any performance parts for it.

get one with either a 2.0 zetec or a 2.3 duratec

Hmm, perhaps I wasn't entirely clear - I'm not looking to mod my car into a track car, I just want a good reasonably powerful stock engine that won't make me wish it had a little more power on some of these ridiculous freeway onramps they have here in SoCal.

I test drove an SE SPI back in '03 when I bought my ZTS. I, personally, thought it was a dog. I'd look for a Zetec. They are not "fast" when stock, but much better than the SPI.

Also, I'd be worried about the SPI dropping a valve and self-destructing, which seems to be a common problem (not that the Zetec doesn't have it's common problems, but it's usually something like the thermostat housing or the valve cover gasket - neither resulting in unavoidable self-destruction).

Find a Duratec focus either 2.0 or 2.3, the Zetec is a dead technology and is the second slowest of the focus family, out of the 3 cars (non sports models, ex. SVT, Saleen, Roush) the Duratec has the most power out of the focus'.

The SPI is not your best choice if you want pep without work.

A Duratec Focus is the way to go. More torque and the HP to back it up. Plus the fuel mileage is better.

What everyone else said....if you get an SPI you will be wishing for not just alittle more power, but way more power. lol but considering your looking at a 2000 LX SPI, you probably only have a few thousand to spend on a car?

Even if its alittle out of your price range I would look for a zetec or even a newer duratec equipped focus. If you don't think you can afford it, think of it this way. The cheap LX your going to buy is a first year car, plagued with recalls and problems, which if you do decide to purchese you better have it checked out and find out what recalls were done to it already. Point is whatever money you save on buying the LX you will probably make up for, if not end up spending more money on maintanence and repairs then on a newer model. Again not that other foci didnt have their probs but you most likley will not be spending as much on maintanence with a new foci (try to get a 03+) then if you got the 00 LX.

As someone with an SPI if I had to do it again I wouldn't. Everytime I get in the car I wish it had more power and that I had gotten a different engine. And now I'm left with the realization that I will have to live with it because it would seem that it's now worth less than what I have owing on it. There are a few parts out there but nothing like the other engiens. I added a SRI which made a bit of difference. I'd also like to add a pulley and a new muffler. But at least my payments are low.
