motor oil viscosity

alright i just read the what motor oil thread (What oil do you use?) and ill probably go with mobil 1 or royal purple....

but what do the 5w20, 5w30, 10w20, 10w30, etc mean??
i live in NJ and it gets cold (although were coming out of it) and gets to 100 in the summer. may end up in mid/upper NY for college in the fall so cold again. i just want a good oil that wont be too thin or thick for each extreme. i was leaning toward the 5w20 but please let me know if im wrong...

also, im at about 17k miles, when do i need to change the oil filter itself?

You're at 17k miles and you havent changed the oil filter? You have way more problems than choosing a viscosity my friend.

And to answer your question: Motorcraft FL-910 Oil Filter and 4.5 Quarts Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend, can't go wrong with OEM stuff, plus at walmart it will only set you back about 17 bucks

Awesome, reading comprehension FTW lol

Viscosity is the flowablitiy of the oil, thickness pretty much. 5w-30, 5w-20 and so on are multi viscosity oils, first number being the cold and later being hot. Lower on either end will be thinner and flow better.

I'm just outside of Philly and 0W-30 German Castrol flows awesomely on cold winter starts, and protects well on 95-degree autocross days.
