Saying goodbye to my 03 ZX3 SVT

I really hate to do it, but..... I am trading in my much loved SVT for a 2009 Focus Coupe SES. The old girl is getting long in the tooth, and I see expensive repairs coming soon. The Gertag 6 speed is again making that dreaded growling noise in neutral. Sounds like a TOB, but me thinks it is the lay shaft bearings. Sounds like a marble being shaken in a tin can. The gear box was replaced at 10K for the same thing under warranty. But I know even my AWA (after warranty adjustment) will not cover this. And the exhaust will need to be replaced very soon, Cat Conv too. The rear lift gate is showing rust. My God I am hating this!!!! I love this car soooo much! And with each passing day the trade in value is less and less. I guess I could sell it my self and get more, but just do not want to deal with the hassles of that. You know once you find a buyer, they will hound you to death when something goes sour. There is now 65K on the car, but I know the engine still has another 150K left in it. It has never seen oil older than 3000 miles. And the car is super clean, as I have OCD, and clean it every stinking day.
But, I still think it is time. The new 09 coupe looks pretty good, and comes with a "tuned exhaust" for a whopping 3 BHP more than stock. WOW I ordered it from the factory as not one dealer within a 1000 miles has what I want. I want the Audiophile sound system, leather heated seats ( a must here in Thew Great North East), Sun (or moon) roof (don't know the diff), ABS, 17 inch wheels and a manual gearbox. I really like the SYNC system too. My wife's 08 SES sedan has it, and it is a very nice feature. This will make my 4th Focus since 2000. My 1st was the 2000 ZX4, which I traded in for the Kona Focus, then the 03 SVT. I also bought my son a Sony Edition ZX4 (which he totaled three months later grrrrrrr). So with my wife's Focus it really makes 6 Foci in all. Do you think I like the Focus ....or what? Well there you have it. Would like to hear from other 09 Coupe owners with their impressions on the car.
Thanks for taking the time to read my long winded post
Bill Rehm .... bfocused

I hate to thread jack, but does the knocking in the tranny go away when you push the clutch? I have the same thing happening to my MTX75 and I was sure it was the throw out berring, but I didnt even think about the lay shaft berrings...

Good Luck with the new ride, but I'm keeping my DD SVT until I find something equally (or even more) fun. No new Focus (offered in this country) can match the SVT at this time. I'm only at 43K miles and really no problems to date. Still under warranty until Sept. '09 too.

I drove an SRT4 Caliber about a month ago. It was relatively quick, but I just don't like the car. Thought about a Cobalt SS too, but not sure I like it either.

Hopefully Ford will get off their azzes soon and offer something comparable to these two, as sooner or later my SVT will need to be replaced.

Why don't you wait if you listen carefully to the wind its says *real quit almost can't hear it* "eco-boost" . I would'nt mind having a decked out 09 coupe. With the euro SVT wheels you can get on them.

Capt Moonpie: The noise does get somewhat lesser with the clutch pushed in, but it is still there. When this happened before they did replace the TOB, but the noise continued. Rather than "throwing parts " at it the Service Manger (a very good and trusted friend) had them replace the whole transmission. This is the dealership I retired from bye the way. I was the Body Shop Manager there for years. I still get treated very well there, and purchased all of my Fords there. My first Ford was a 1989 Ranger, which I drove for over 140K. I had a Amsoil oil filtration system installed on it that also added a front mount oil cooler. This was a very large filter in a canister that added 2.5 more qts to the system. Amsoil is a very good product, if you can find a local distributor. They are getting hard to find. But this a full synthetic lub, that was developed for the space program, as I said, Very Good stuff!

It sounds like you've convinced yourself to trade your SVTF. It happens to a lot of people and it sounds like it's happened to you.

On one hand, you could just save your pesos and drive it 'till it dies and have it towed to the junk yard or trade it now, never knowing how many miles you had left in the old girl.

It happens to everyone and the economy (Ford too) could use an infusion of cash and someone who can't swing a new SES could wind up with your SVTF.

If you can swing it, do it, a big part of the economic problem in the USA is everyone is scared to spend.
