03 zx3 with 2600 miles for 8k

i was at a local dealer today , looking to see what id get for a trade in on my 05 , and i was only offered 3200 , and i still owe 5800 on the thing. anyway they had a 03 zx3 5spd with ac and fogs with only 2600 miles on it.

they wanted 8k for it , but it has a small dent on the right side. if i was to trade my car in then it be 12k , doesnt sound like a good deal , but if bought outright it could be ? not very often you find an 03 in almost mint shape with only 2600 miles.

why would you downgrade??? it would be really dumb to do that, you would have a newer car and pay less or an older car and pay more?? sounds like a no brainer to me!

I wouldn't call it a downgrade entirely. Most of the changes from '03 to '05 were cosmetic (interior trim, front bumper, headlights, etc.). You may get heated discussions on Zetec vs Duratec engines, but I wouldn't say one is vastly superior over the other by any means. Also assuming the '05 model he owns now is completely stock, chances are it's one of the lower trims that didn't come with a rear OEM sway bar. That '03 model comes with a front and rear one stock, which offers better cornering. However he could just go out and buy a rear sway bar for his '05... or better yet the SVT suspension kit for much cheaper than the trade-in, assuming it fits the '05 models (???).

But anyway I wouldn't call the trade a complete downgrade. That's quite a stretch. You may kill your resale value in the process, but if you plan on keeping the car until the end of its life, you'd probably be just as happy with the '03 (if not more) in stock form than the '05, and not to mention having an almost brand new engine with barely any miles on it.

Don't do it.

Dealers try and rip you off. Sell your car locally and if you feel the need you can buy the car from the dealer. Trade-ins are for people too lazy to sell their car themselves. No offense.

Post your car on craigslist for 2 weeks and see what kind of reaction you get. Then try autotrader. Trading it in should be the last resort. Selling privately will always get you more money.

Good luck!

I have an 03 focus zx3 and it's amazing! I'd rather have an svt w/ a 2.3L duratec engine but that's just me..

well my car has 85000 miles on it , and yes it the stock s model. ive tried selling my car , and ive only had one person look at it. i like the 03 cuz its pretty much brand new , and has the ability to be supercharged. id like to add some stuff to my car , but i cant find any of the parts i want , so its kind of tough. and svt's dont have the duratec.

oh yea , as for fuel economy im only getting 25mpg on the highway , wtf ?

Being that it's a 2005, sounds like you need to have your ECU re-flashed.

I would say keep the '05 until it's either paid off or you aren't upside down anymore.

If you finance $12,000 for an '03, you will be upside down forever. Then, when you go to buy your next car, you'll be even further in the hole.

On the other hand, if you keep the '05 and keep paying the loan down, you will be in one of these two much better positions:

1) At some point you owe exactly what the '05 is worth. Now you can buy an $8,000 car and pay $8,000 OR you can buy a $12,000 car that is worth $12,000.

2) You pay off the loan. Now you can buy a $12,000 car and only finance $10,000 (or whatever).

I've been upside down before (turned in a lease early because of mileage and had to roll the remaining payments in), and it's not pretty.

Stick with the '05. It only has 85K on it, so you've got plenty of life left on it.
