Angry gm and chrysler's vehicles they are dropping

well i recieved a call from my father today reading me this article over the phone. this is what the economy has done to our beloved original auto makers. they are dropping a few models and completly dropping saturn.

now in my experience i have owned 3 saturns and i have to say they were more reliable than my focus could ever dream to be. the only thing that stopped them were another car, telephone pole and a tree (i was to cheap to buy new tires and winter's here in MA SUCK!!!!!!!)

so enough of me babbling you can just read it for yourself.

http://autos.yahoo.com/articles/auto...puh9rim2gazJV4

post what you guys think about this whole ordeal.

Saturn made sense when it was a "different kind of car"; when Saturn sold models that didn't compete with any other GM products. The new Saturn, while offering nice cars, drains money from GM because they spend money differentiating its models from Chevy and Pontiac (two GM brands that sell cars in the same categories). Shedding brands makes sense. Look at Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and now Hyundai--they all have 2 or 3 brands that encourage "stepping up" (Scion for the first car, Toyota next, then Lexus when you "make it"). That's what GM needs to do--Chevy, Buick, Cadillac (Buick only gets to live because of its popularity in China, really).

This is why Ford has been selling brands for some time now. Bye-bye Jaguar, Astin Martin, most of its stock in Mazda. Volvo is in the "for sale" listings too. Volvo and Saab are two sides of the same coin, really. Both are niche European makers that lose money. Nice cars, but not viable as they are now.

What makes no sense at all is GM's insistence on keeping GMC. I see no reason to keep selling re-badged Chevy trucks. I feel the same way about Mercury. Ford needs to get some new product for Mercury or kill it.

Just read it myself, and personally I think GM has the right idea for the most part. Most of their cars are just copys of their other cars, as is the case with ALL of Saturn, and Hummer is just plain retarded in today's market. Too expensive, too fuel hungry. Saab shouldn't necessarily go away, it just needs a major overhaul. Saab's vehicles have the nicest interiors in all of GM, and they are very nice cars, but when you have a 9-5 that has a smaller engine than a 9-3, yet is way more expensive, then you have problems.

As for Chrysler, their small and midsize cars need a severe overhaul, and they need better SUV's that get better gas mileage. Cutting the PT Cruiser may be a big mistake, as it was and still is one of their best selling models. It really needs to be updated and improved, but not cut.

chrysler said it just cant evolve teh style of teh PT cruiser anymore and its been no rumor that sooner or later it would die. the plan used to be that they were going to kill the PT and bring back another funky-retro wagon with a new name. they had a concept a few years ago ( i forget what it was called, but it had surf boards on the roof and a really small front end) and it was rumored that we would see that as teh pt successor but with thiseconomy, they may as well just stick with the dodge caliber and overhaul it. honestly, i would buy a sebring, the interior has a great design i like it a bunch! but the quality of materials and the outside is terrible.

Yay FORD!!!!

chrysler needs to be downsized to one model: the jeep wrangler. it needs to be taken back to basics and everything else needs to go away.

GM needs to seriously consider killing pontiac. aside from the g8, what do they sell that is different from chevy's lineup?

To be honest its probably good that this is happening, It seems bad now, but in reality it will let them become competitive again, along with ford. This poor economy allows the car manufacturers to renegotiate with the unions instead of moving the whole plant to another country, which used to be easyier and cheaper. With this ford will also be able to renegotiate. Not to knock the union, because it did have its place and time, but when you have to pay a unionized sheetmetal worker 45 dollars an hour(over a year thats more than an engineer, its $93,600 before taxes), when a non-union sheet metal worket gets around $18 to $24 at the highest, its no wonder why they move the plants. All in all I belive it will bring more jobs back to the US(which is awesome) and will bring out a lot of newer vehicals.
