Going to Iraq... Need car advice...

Hello everybody. I'm new here and this forum is VERY helpful and everyone is very friendly so I figured I'd ask for some advice here. I bought a used 2000 Focus SE in August and now have 80000 miles on it. In the six months I've had it, the shifter cable broke, my 3rd gear syncro is messed up, the trunk hatch is messed up, and I need new tires. I had to replace my spark plugs, ignition wires and ignition coil just 2 days ago as well. So, as you can see I've put a decent amount of money into the car and still have repairs to make on it. I don't do the repairs myself unless its something simple. For example, I'll fix the trunk latch, I fixed the interior gauge lights myself when they stopped lighting up at night.

So anyway, I'm not too sure what to do. I'm leaving for Iraq for a one year deployment March 2nd and I kind of get the impression that this car just isn't reliable. I also forgot to mention the lock cylinder for the ignition key is messed up so I'd need a brand new one to make a duplicate key (I only have one key).

I'll come home with about 30-40 grand. Should I fix up the car a little bit and keep it? I don't think its wise for me to get a new car because my insurance is already pretty high. Is it even worth it to put all this money into making all these repairs? Or should I go for a slightly newer used Focus (to keep the insurance down) or maybe even a different car.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated. And if you read this huge post, I thank you for that as well

That's a tough call. You could fix it and pocket most of that, or you could indulge and get a new better car. I wouldn't blow all of it on a car but you could possibly budget $10K and find a nice used car and then save or invest the rest.

I'm going to move this the Focus and general car chat are as it's not really technical and you'll get more opinions there.

Thanks for the help... I figured it might be best under technical because it does involve repairs but I wasn't sure.

I remember seeing somewhere the 2000 Focus was plagued with problems
was it the 2000 ones? I don't remember if it was 99 or 00

Probably the 2000 going off of the experience I have with my 2000. It's like the problems are endless and I'm not sure if I fix the problems I wont run into any more or not. At least any more severe like these.

you are going to be gone for a year, i say that you should sell your car and start looking for one a little before you get back, you wont need the car and it would be just sitting home(assuming that), so why not just wait?...BTW, good luck on the Middle East.

x3, unless you've got a wife or some family member that could use the car for the year, it'd just be sitting. might as well sell it and buy something a little newer when you get back. and good luck, stay safe.

haha, *edit* x4
