With proper and regular maintenance, these engines should last a very long time - for example, the SPI engine in the base model Focus is the same engine (more or less) used in Escorts for years. We had a 93 Escort wagon that went close to 180,000 miles trouble-free before we finally used the car as a trade-in. The SPI/Zetec engines are similar designs and I would expect similar results as well.

As for the quarter-mile, uh, well.... don't expect much. The Focus isn't dog-slow, but it's no speed demon either.

The Focus is a pretty decent handler right out of the box - even better if you make a few basic suspension mods. The SVT (I'm a little partial here ) handles fantastically. I had (have, I guess, but it's "wrecked") an 86 MR2 that I thought was a great handler until I drove the SVT - and it was all over, had to have that Focus!

Focus' are great in the "twisties" , even w/ the stock suspension. Make sure you get one with the Zetec, much better than the SPI, more aftermarket stuff too. A stock Zetech fOCUS can keep up with a stock vtec Civic, more or less. A few hundred $$ in add-ons and you'll be whippin' some punk a$$!

Join the crowd, you'll love it.

Oh no, here we go! This has been the subject of so many posts. Zetec is just the name Ford gave one of it's engine families - it is not a variable valve-timing system like Honda's VTEC. The Zetec was first used (in the U.S.) in the Escort ZX2, the Ford Contour, and others. Good motor, certainly a lot better than the SPI (sorry SPI owners) if you're into more power and future mods.
