Sooty Exhaust and low mpg

Hi There

Just found this forum and hope there is someone here who can help. I bought a 2004 Focus Zetec 1.6 two weeks ago and have noticed the mpg is low (26 ish - mostly urban, 7-8 mile journeys) and a very sooty deposit on the exhaust - could this indicate a problem? I don't really know much about maintaining a car myself and would be very, very grateful if anyone can throw some light on this for me.

Cheers in advance.

Thanks so much for all your replies. Is there any way I can fix the 'running rich' problem myself. Thanks in advance for you help.

Cheers
