Filling up your car

I have been noticing that my needle on the fuel gauge starts to come off the full mark at around 65km. It has been very consistant since new, so has the milage per tank. In my manual, Ford states not to top up the tank, and no more then 2 clicks(fuel handle clicking off) after it shuts off the first time. I have been doing this since new. It is an 08 and was wondering if others top it off right to the top. I also keep it on the slow setting while filling. The first quarter of the tank goes fast while the next half tank is where I get my milage from and the last quarter tank goes fast also. In winter I average around 400km on 3/4 of a tank(I don't let it get below 1/4, especially in winter), and summer I average around 500km on 3/4 of a tank. This is about 80% city and 20% highway per tank.

I don't top mine up either. I must have read that in the manual too, because i've always done it for my other vehicles.

I think i've complained about this before, but the way the gauge is calibrated in my 07 really bugs me. I'll let my car get down to 1/4 or even 1/8th of a tank and then i'll fill it and it only takes 35-40L. The manual states that it has a 55L tank. I've never tested this claim because going below 1/8th of a tank puts me into a cold sweat lol.
It just seems odd that it would be calibrated this way unless it has a 10 or 15L reserve tank which seems kind of excessive. Can anybody shed some light on this, and is there any way for me to recalibrate the fuel gauge to be more accurate?

Back on topic, i usually get 450-550kms per fillup on summer road trips, similar to the OP. But knowing that there is still 15L in my tank makes me think that i could push it closer to the 800km range if i really wanted to. My regular mileage is significantly less because most of my daily driving is done in the city, and i work just a few kms from my house so it barely even gets warmed up by the time i get to work. I usually only get 350km per 3/4 in those conditions.

I put 2 gallons plus in mine after the first click off. Then I round it to the next half dollar. I have never had any problems. I have been doing this since the car was new in March of 08.

Here in NJ we still have no self service, so the attendants usually round it to the next dollar, which means they are really cramming gas in. If I travel out of state, I usually stop when it shuts off, maybe round to the next $.25, $.50 or $.75. Either way, I've not had a problem, but the car goes quite a distance before the needle coming off full, and goes down progressively faster as the gas is used, to where I won't usually let it under a 1/4.

you shouldnt let it go past half tank at all. you end up paying more if it gets below there due to all the air in the tank that has to disperse or something.

and also pump at the lowest speed.
