I went looking at hatchbacks recently.

Sorry to pollute the FF forums with non Focus stuff but I've always been a big fan of two door hatchbacks. Now that Ford has (hopefully) temporarily discontinued the two door hatchbacks, there's not as many options. Anyhow, I looked at two, two door hatches: the Volvo C30

and the Saturn Astra:

Both were nice looking cars but what really killed me was how close they were in price. The Volvo sticker was right at $24,000 while the Astra was at $22,500. Admittedly the C30 I was looking at was a base model and the Astra was pretty well loaded, still the Astra seemed cheap and flimsy (well everything is like that compared to a Volvo) but it just didn't have the appeal the C30 did. I'm also further biased because I drove the C30 but didn't drive the Astra. I didn't think the Astra would come across well after driving a 230 turbo charged car.

The worst thing was how disappointed I was in the domestic offerings. I hate to bash the US auto makers but if I had to buy a car that day, the C30 would have easily been worth the extra $1500.

Then again, from what I've heard, both Saturn and Volvo have "uncertain" futures.

You're not really polluting with non-Focus stuff, since the C30 is basically a Focus anyway...

Are you looking exclusively for domestic? I made the switch from Focus ZX3 to 2-door Rabbit. $16,300 starting price, for a 2-door '09 model with 5-speed manual. Packed with TONS of standard features and safety equipment (8 airbags, traction control, stability control, ABS, etc.). 170 hp/177 lb-ft of torque. Probably the best car overall in its class, for the price you pay. No reliability issues that I know of, after hanging around the community for 8 months. Mine has 10k miles on it and I've had zero malfunctions. These things are built solid.

Or if you're unwilling to get any imports, your best bet would be to wait around for the Fiesta. It seems like the closest you'll get to a ZX3 nowadays. I wouldn't hold my breath otherwise. I'm not happy about it either, but nobody's making anything good on this side of the pond. Until Ford and all the other domestic manufacturers wake up and see that people WANT hatchbacks, they're not going to be getting my money. Although I have to admit I am a little jealous of the Challenger. But I need something a little more practical.

People don't want hatchbacks, plain and simple. I'm a huge fan but hatchbacks are looked down upon as economy cars since the 70s always have and always will.

To the OP i would also recommend the Rabbit, better built and cheaper than both. Plus you could swing for a GTI for that kind of money.

I'm not willing to part with my SVTF yet, but I'd probably choose the C30 unless Saturn built a Redline Astra. Didn't Pontiac use the Astra name for thier version of the Vega?

Same here. I just can't stand the look of the rear end for some reason.
