Air Intake filter for 05-2.0

I posted this on the Duratec as well.

I am looking to see if anyone has cut open the stock airbox on this model to try and find a replaceable filter to use. Dealer tells me it is a deiposable and it is $200 new. What the hell!

I figure a person could cut it open and maybe find a K&S brand to fit the hole.

Any thoughts? at 75,000 on mycar I am sure it could use a new filter...gas mileage is already down a bit.

Thanks for any help.

I do not want to go with a performace type and want to maintain stock.

I humbly refer you here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBA_7...eature=channel

Check out the other 'AirBox Revenge' video there as well. They were taken at a garage day a few weeks ago. We discovered an easy way to open up the 'eternal use' airbox that the Duratecs have.

And for the record, there are 2 paper filters and one foam lining in there. Not sure what aftermarket filter would fit it though. your best bet is to just take out the airbox all together and put a cone filter in its place if you are looking for more performance.

That airbox took nearly an hour to get out and is the biggest foul-up in the entire history of automotive engineering.

P.S. That's my airbox that's being destroyed :)

I just figured if I could get it open with little trouble...well besides a saw...which is fine too, I could certainly find a filter to fit the box.

I can't look at the video from work but will this evening.

Thanks

Yeah, just get a CAI or SRI for it. Should be able to find something for less than $200.

Better yet... the stealth intake mod! It will cost about the same as a K+N replacement filter. I did it to my 05 ST. I raced my buds car a few times before and a few times after and there was definitely an improvement in my car after I did it.

Though I wouldn't say the stock intake was the worst automotive engineering ever. It did its job on keeping ease of maintenance. If you look at the location, it is in a place where cold air is available and has some shield from dust, therefore causing the "filter" to stay clean longer. Though I can't imagine it has optimum flow due to the layers of filter and foam and small inlet and five feet of tubing. But I bet the layers of filter were only letting clean air through! haha

K&N makes a replacement Stock air filter. It is #33-2877 and is $40 shipped.

Or if you want a aftermarket filter for it I can get you a K&N Intake for $258 shipped. #57-2559 K&N K&N Fuel Injection Performance Kits (FIPK) [Ford Focus 2.0L(2003-2005)]
We would have to order it so it may take a week to come in. But we can drop ship it from them for $15 extra if you need it faster.

How can K&N make a replacement if a person can't bust it open to get the old out?

^^^Might want to double check, but I'm 99.9% sure that it's a "OEM" complete unit that it replaced at the 100,000 service. Prob. pretty $$$ So, I believe that there is not "replacable" air filter.
