VW's, I'm starting to like em

So I drove my mom's little 1.8 turbo beetle (Which she is selling on CL) and just loved the VW feel and look of the interior, and the performance of the car is great, so I started looking around for a new car, and I found one that caught my eye, the 1999 VW Passats 1.8 turbo's. Anyone ever driven one/owned one/know anyone who owns one? are they good cars?

My friend had a 2000 vw golf turbo, and he said it was the best car he's had. I like the feel and look of it, which led me to a focus ;) IF i had to choose, it would be a focus, but i do like the VW's. Never rode in a passat though, but they seem similar.

What's not to love? I started out with VW's, they are what got me into cars per-say. The VW community is one of the coolest ones out there. Only down fall is a seemingly vast majority of the MkIV community are a bunch of ass clowns. If you are considering a Passat, skip the 1999, from 2001.5 and on they went to the B5.5 Passat which has a much refreshing minor face lift and is generally more refined and reliable.

I would in an instant, but I can't find one in good repair for the price range I can afford. :/

The one I'm looking at has a new timing belt and tensioner though :D

EDIT: Also, what do you mean more reliable?

are there some common problems with the 99's?

VW? The problem with them is that theyre almost as vanilla as Toyota. Soulless, boring, overpriced cars, IMO. Theyre built real well, have decent reliability, etc, but theyre just... blah. Just my opinion. Ive driven a few Golf GTis, but not the new one. Drove the VR6, wasnt impressed at all. To be super honest, the Focus is just more fun to drive, amplified 5 fold with the SVT.

I like that new crossover they have. It comes with a 2.0 turbo. I have three kids so the Focus can get tight. My second car is a Surburban.
