import salvage

i don't really want to get anything started here but i was just thinking a second ago, what if there's some loop hole that would let you import a car into the us if it was under a salvage title? think about it... you could buy it cheap, import it to the us so that at least it's here, and then, over time, you could repair it, fix it up, etc.... probably not happening, but ya never know. anybody know?

Well first I don't want a Salvaged titled US car so I surly don't want an salvaged non US car. If it was'nt repaired right then it could be really dangerous. Non US bumpered cars almost all of them are only 2.5mph bumpers where here in the states they are 5mph. I have eurapean bumpers and I'm already taken a chance trust me there is not much under those things and thats without a salvaged title or car. So I would have to say no thank to that. Now though you did'nt say anything about pulling parts off which I am totally for! People get front clips from japan all the time they cut the car in half and bam its legal. I do wish the US would loosen there importing laws a little just enough that those of us who want the cars can at least pay to drive them instead of it being illegal. I guess we can all dream they can't make that illegal......yet.

I think importing a salvage car would be sweet.....but only for parts.

I completely agree with sleepy....I'm not even sure they have "CarFax" to check the title of a foreign car.

My big thing though would be "how cheap" can you get one for.

well carfax does'nt mean anything.Take my car for example. Carfax said everything checked out well....my car was'nt has good has it said. You see has long has nobody makes a police report or file something with the insurance than it won't show up on carfax. I know that my car has been wrecked before. You ask how? Well my lower radiator support, Radiator, A/C radiator thingy and all other stuff in that region of the car is bent. If I went turbo the n I would have to replace all that stuff. You ask why leave that bent up stuff on there. Well it works and does'nt over heat so i figure its ok oh and the a/c blows cold. My thinking is if it works then leave it alone. Its been that way since I've owned the car. I am totally down for stripping and ST170 or heck even an RS of its parts! Now that would be cool the ricers like JDM why can't we like EDM!!

Carfax is good to a point....think of all the flooded cars from Katrina that have probably been fixed and resold....

Rustbuckets waiting to happen.

One of our members here CaysE almost got burned on a flood car. He and his girl were looking for a cheep sedan for her and they found one at a local dealer in New Jersey. He had noticed a little rust on the underside but didn't think much of it. They were just about ready to sign for it when Cayse happened to take a look at the bolts holding the front seats.... entirely rusted. So he pulled back some of the carpet and lo and behold.... RUSTBUCKET!

He did manage to find a fairly nice sedan for Cherry in the end though

It would be nice to import a car, but I'm not one for rebuilt titles. Some people don't care, but I do lol. I'm sure there is some kinda of loop-hole. I wonder if you couldn't "change the VIN on it." Now to show you where I coming from. My VW, in my "what I drive", <<<<<. It is a FACTORY built rail buggy with a 10 number VIN(serial number). Where it is a 10 number VIN my local dmv listed it as a homemade vehicle. Which its being an atv and "homemade," made my insurance for it very expensive. So that leaves a person to think, huh?

I would never want to buy a car with a salvage title... whether it be a US car, Japanese car, or even a euro.. you can never know what is wrong with that car..

I dont think the OP was thinking about trying to re-sell the car in the US, so who cares if it is a salvage title. I dont see any problem with importing a car and fixing it up. If you fix it right it isnt any more dangerous than if the car didnt have a salvage title. All a salvage title means is it had more damage done to it than the value of the car(and thats if it is reported to insurance), not that it is unfixable.
