Only about 15 MPG this last tank...

My gas gauge acted up on my 07, showing only 1/2 tank when I had just topped the tank off, so I called the Dealer since I'm still on the Bumper to Bumper warranty. They told me there was a problem with the excess sulfur in the post-hurricane gas messing up the gas gauges. Anyhow, I found I only got 168 miles on 11 gallons of gas. WTF?!?

its remotely possible, all that crud on the bottom of the gas tanks got sucked up with the shortage, since gas stations usually don't pump it dry. Also an easy way to blame it on the customer.

168 miles was off the trip meter. It took 11 gals to fill it up. I reset at every fill up. I'm OC about it.

Normally I make 28 to 30 MPG.

I live here in NC (in the mountains) where we were out of gas for weeks after the last hurricane. I could see them sending us some low grade gas.

This reminds me of an incident that occurred when my buddy and I were returning to Phoenix after a 3 day bender in Vegas. It was my buddy's turn to buy some gas, so I pulled up to the pump and got out to check my tire pressure and stretch my legs. My friend swiped his debit card, pushed the 87 octane button, and then stuck in the nozel and locked the trigger in place. He then immediately walked away from the pump and started cleaning my windshield.

After a few seconds we realized that the gas was no longer pumping and assumed the tank was full, the pump stated that over 9 gallons were pumped... but when we had pulled up we had almost a half tank. Whatever, we drove away and I realized that my Gauge still only read 1/2 tank, but since my buddy was convinced that he had pumped gas, we assumed the pump gauge was broken.

After traveling another 130 miles or so, I noticed that the gauge was now reading almost empty, so I pulled over to buy gas just in case... and it swallowed up about 11.5 gallons.
Was I really only getting 11 or 12 miles per gallon... no, my friend hadn't actually pumped any gas.

I figured I'd tell this story, because I don't think it's possible for a focus to achieve only 15 mpg.

So to clarify your friend paid for a lot of thin air.
