Enlighten me

What are the key differences between the SPI to the Zetec to the Duratec engines? No real reason to know this other than being well informed. Thanks for the help.

the SPI is a hemi. seriously
from wikipedia: The engine was originally conceived in 1974 and is unique in terms of its valves mounted at a compound angle, which allows for a hemispherical combustion chamber shape without using a more expensive twin camshaft arrangement. It also featured hydraulic valve lifters, a first for a European Ford engine. The 2.0 was introduced in the 1997 Escort. It now used split port induction and produced 110 hp (82 kW) and 125 ft·lbf (170 Nm). The additional displacement was achieved by boring the 1.9 engine to 84.8 mm (3.339 in). It is the most refined CVH engine made, and continued to deliver excellent fuel economy

the zetec:
Ford Motor Company used the Zetec name on a variety of Inline-4 cylinder automobile engines. It was coined to replace "Zeta" on a range of 1.6 L to 2.0 L multi-valve engines introduced in 1991. The company used the name widely in European advertising and later introduced it to the North American market with the Contour. The 2.0 L Zetec shared its 84.8 mm (3.339 in) bore and 88 mm (3.465 in) stroke with its predecessor, the 2.0 L 2-valve SPI. A high 10.2:1 compression ratio and larger valves contributed to the SVT version's much-higher output.

duratec:
The Duratec is a range of four, six and twelve-cylinder gasoline engines used in Ford cars. The Duratec HE is the name used by Ford of Europe for its family of small straight-4 and V6 gasoline engines. The family includes 1.8 L (110 CID; 1796 cc) and 2.0 L (122 CID; 1999 cc) DOHC 16-valve engines and the 2.5 L V6 (also called the Duratec 25). European 1.8 L and 2.0 L Duratec HE engines are built at the Valencia Engine Plant in Spain. The compression rate is 10.8:1. Beginning in 2004, Ford dropped the old 4-cylinder Zetec engines in favor of Mazda's MZR design. Thus, 2005 and present Duratec 4-cylinder engines are Mazdas. This includes the 2.0 L Duratec 20 the 2.3 L Duratec 23 and the all new 2.5 L Duratec 25. The engine is currently built by Ford in Chihuahua, Mexico; Dearborn, Michigan; Valencia, Spain; Laguna, Philippines; and Nanjing, China.

that should be a good start for ya, if you read thru it all

then I'd say their best bet would be to get a stroker kit for the 2.3 and bore it out to 2.5L......

wow that's informative though, so I really drive a hemi..... lol gotta tell the dodge guys now

I actually remember the Hemi Head. We had a Escort in the shop that spat a rod one time that we tore down. It was interesting. Why bore it out? Why not a V6? It'll fit

why bore it out? eh.....probably cause you don't have to change almost all the wiring? I dunno.... ah fun stuff though. and, thenorm, you wouldn't happen to know the compression ratio for the SVT and the SPI, would you?

stupid stupid stupid high elevation........ our target compression is much lower because of it....:B
