Good cheap, radar detectors?

Hmm.. looking for something cheap, but will still work. Anyone have some police radar detectors that they would recommend? Thanks :]

Yep Valentine and Escort are two of the best you can get but they are both expensive. I have wasted a lot of money on cheap radar detectors and they never give you enough warning. My uncle is a police officer and he says even the most expensive ones don't help that much. Most of the time they have your speed before the detector goes off.

I finally got an Escort a few years ago and it seemed better then the cheap ones but still didn't give you much of a chance to slow down. Now days I just try to keep my speed down. It took 6 speeding tickets to learn my lesson. It helps on the gas mileage too!

I just checked Amazon quick and you can get a used Escort for $200. That's a good price if you don't mind used.

The only thing I've heard about radar detectors leads me to believe that "cheap" and "good" are mutually exclusive.

Pony up, and you'll be happier.

^^ yup. "good" and "cheap" will never describe a single radar detector. I reccomend valentine one.

I can vouch for cheap radar detectors being useless. This was probably ten years ago maybe? I had a name-brand detector (but not a GOOD brand like Valentine or Escort) that had all the latest gizmos, but it mostly just beeped like crazy when driving near a shopping center (the automatic door openers set it off) and many times it never gave me a warning when I was driving directly into a radar speed trap. It even had a setting to supposedly eliminate all these false alarms from door openers and such, but it didn't work for crap; and when you are constantly hearing the thing beep, you tend to tune it out, reducing the likelihood that it will save your butt in a "for reals" situation.

If you're going to get a radar detector lay out the cash for a good quality one, but even so, don't expect miracles. Oh, and check your local regulations, they are illegal in some areas.

Radar Dectors are worthless. The cops now aday's have either a range advantage or an instant on system which means your detector tells you your going to get a ticket.

Notsomuch.

I just did almost 1k miles up & down this state over the weekend. My car is NOT low profile by any means. , and Valentine One easily kept me out of 6 tickets. I was detecting mostly radar during the daytime, and LOTS of laser activity at night.

One CHP was down in the bushes on the side of the road; out of the car, no reflectors, no lights on, but with a radar gun. I detected him a mile before I got to him. Had I been going any 'extra legal' speed, my goose would have been easily cooked. I was detecting other officers before AND after sometimes up to 2 miles.
