Ford Prodigy, Chrysler ESX, and GM Precept

Say what? I never knew this. It's something Clinton and Gore did. SO where is this now? Read it and you'll be mad. I saw this on Frontline- a PBS documentary program.

72 MPG American cars from the 90's

the ceo's were probably threatened by the oil barons. those guys run the show called "todays world we live in". So there u have it...all the technology was developed many years ago.....not when toyota came out with the prius. very very stupid.

Think about it. What auto executive in his/her right mind is going to admit to the federal government that the project is not "on track"?

"Yes, your honor... this efficient vehicle project isn't working, we've only met a handful of the technical goals, we're behind schedule, and we can't figure out how we're ever going to produce this thing economically... Sure, you have my permission to take the stacks of taxpayer money you've lavished upon our R&D department, and go give it to our competitors..."

You can put on your tinfoil hat and chalk this up to some conspiracy involving Big Oil and smoke-filled back rooms. OTOH it can also be explained by the carmakers choosing to bail out of an over-ambitious and uneconomical project before their executives got dragged in front of a Senate committee to explain how they've spent millions of dollars of taxpayer money but have nothing to show for it.

The fact is no one wanted these cars. Yes, oil played a part but the consumer is the biggest part of the problem. If these cars were so popular then why did everyone buy an SUV? The automakers didn't shove these behemoths down people throats, they CHOSE them over fuel efficient offerings, such as these concept cars. If they really wanted fuel efficiency then they should not have bought them, that's just capitalism not some conspiracy theory. Blame the stupidity of the average American.

^^^ What jgustafson said. Keep in mind that in the late 90s, gas was around $1.50/gal and the American automakers were raking in the profits on full-size SUVs. Ford was rumored to be making a five-figure profit on each Expedition they sold.

If you're an auto executive, why bother producing a vehicle loaded with unproven technology to maximize a feature that's near the bottom of most current buyers' priority lists, rather than producing a massively profitable vehicle based on proven and existing technology?

The Ford Prodigy looks like a Ford Five Hundred, probably smaller; and that Diesel Hybrid technology it going to be awesome to have.
