Diesel 4x4 compact pickups in U.S. by 2009?

I read an article in the "Cars" section of the Arizona Republic that said that Indian automotive company Mahindra was planning on bringing their small, simple, diesel powered trucks/suvs to U.S. shores sometime in 2009. They would be powered by a 2.2 litre common rail clean diesel, be available in 2 and 4 door variants and averge 30mpg! Because importing fully assembled trucks is expensive due to taxes, the trucks will be assembled from Indian parts in a new US facility, creating American jobs in the process. The article didn't say anything about pricing.

I think this would be pretty cool. People in Europe and Asia have been able to buy compact pickups with small turbo diesels for years, and now we might get the same opportunity.
This isn't a link to the article, but instead to the company website to give everyone a good idea what wer're dealing with here.

Any thoughts on this?

It is about time if that were to happen, I wouldn't mind having one of my own.

Ha ha more proof FORD'S LEADERS HAVE NO FREAKING IDEA WHAT PEOPLE WANT!!

I'd be all over a small Ford diesel, but they are clinging to the failure of diesels in the 80's like this isn't a new generation already. Besides diesels have come a long way since those big failures which were not Ford anyway. At least give me a Transit Connect with a turbo diesel.

BTW, if the Indians don't turbo their diesel, that's stupid. All diesels should be turboed.

It's only Ford US that have no idea... back in 03 I went on a cruise with and we stopped in Belize.. Saw a beautiful quad cab Ranger 4x4 with some sort of what looked to be factory off road package, and it was a turbo diesel... gorgeous little truck...
