Breathalyzer Key System....Pentition for it NOW!!!!

Ford is one of the leaders in saftey for automobiles and is constantly pumping money into R&D to make cars and trucks safer. Volvo is also known for this even more so, making some of the safest vehicals on the planet. back in 2005 volvo was working on a breathalyzer system that basically makes the vehical inoperable if the driver is over the legal limit. Now with all these other crazy technologies being shoved into cars these days...the latest is Blind Spot Detection which Ford is promoting as well as their MY Key smart key that'll limit the speed the vehical can go amongst other things.

A breathalyzer system, like for example a key fob you have to blow into, if you pass the car will start, if not your not going anywhere. I don't see why this would be such a hard thing to come up with or put in cars. Amongst all these other technologies it would probably prevent the most accidents and deaths of all, because drunk driving accidents are so high in this country.

Volvo started something, but I guess the plan was killed or didnt get enough attention. I started this thread because I am going to write a letter to Ford proposing that they fund the development of this saftey feature and working with Volvo will have it in every car by 2010....and get the government to make it a standard option in every car, truck, suv and motorcycle, by the same year or shortly after. So please fellow FF'ers, email or write to Ford with this proposal, maybe if they get enough support they will do it.

I'm at an age where my friends and others drink, and party and want to have fun, and many of them easily forget that its not a good idea to pick up the keys. I'm sure many know sometimes how difficult or stressful it is to try to stop someone from getting behind the wheel after way too many drinks. It would be much easier if no arguments had to come up and they couldnt leave just cause the fact that their car won't let them.

So, do your part.

so you would have to blow everytime that you wanted to start your car even if you don't drink? What if there was a malfunction with the device and it read low and someone drove and crashed, then would ford be responsible for letting you drive?

I lost a friend to a drunk driver and will be the first to smack the shit out of someone who drives drunk. But making everyone breathe first will NOT be a good selling point. It is people's responsibility not to drive drunk, not the automakers. If people weren't such idiots and driving drunk we wouldn't have to even worry about it.

If I know I'm too "happy" to drive, I put the keys in my trunk, let the seat back and take a nap. I usually wake up four or five hours later, REALLY hungry. There's no way I can get a DUI... they're too expensive.

Okay, the N key is nowhere near the P E T I T I or O keys. Easier to respect a request for a petition if the word is spelled right. Beyond that, Mythbusters have shown that if you have just had mouthwash in your mouth, you're gonna max out a breathalyzer ... so guess we'll become a nation with bad teeth since we can't swish with listerine before work.

So, do your part.

Goto walmart.
Buy punching bag balloon.
Fill with air before you go out drinking.
Get drunk.
Use air in balloon on keyfob deal, push lightly so its like you blowing.
Drive car.

With nobody "watching" and policing it, its useless.

This too. Its a shame they take out innocent people, but fact is, if they are dumb enough to drink and drive, they deserve the chance of killing themselves.

i theory this is an great idea, ive lost friends from drunk driving and what not, but the idea just wont work, there is no way that any car company would put this is their products because it would kill sales, they just simply wouldnt be able to do it, and people would find a way around it for sure.

i DONT and NEVER drink and drive, and to take a breathalyzer test to start my car every time i would be fustrated as all hell and would disable that as soon as i figured out how.

good idea in theory but something that would never happen.

but i just thought of something a car that wont move/start, unless your seat belt is buckled, this would be a better idea, not related to drunk driving, but just to driving safely. that would be something that would have a much better chance on happening than a breathalyzer test everytime to start your car, cuz you have to do it anyways

yep yep, again, it SOUNDS good at first. but there's too many arguments against it. not practical for the average consumer. now if you've been busted for dui, maybe this should be required. idk how that would work exactly either.
