What should I do?

I have a 1972 VW beetle. It needs a lot of work, but has been in my family for over 20 years. I bring this up because last night someone broke out the drivers side rear quarter glass. I thought they had stolen the HU or the Focal mids and highs, but they left the $1000 in stereo and only wanted to vandalize. I am trying to decide whether to sell it and buy parts for the Focus or keep it and begin the restoration process...

I had aspirations for this to be something special, before I bought the SVT and now I only drive it when it is really convient or in the spring and fall.

Here it is taking a little ride...

Poor thing...

I think the history of the car is what keeps me from selling it, but I would like to own a trick old VW Bug.

Let me know your opinions and Please be kind.

well, the mongrel in me says take off that ridiculous body, slap on a supercharged civic type-R engine on the back of it, reinforce the body and redo the suspension, then take it to laguna seca and outrun ya some Ferrari's!!!!

But..... the sensible side of me says keep it and bring it back. If the floors not rusted out and the engine's in decent shape, just do a full restoration on it and you'll have the ride of the town.

If you can afford to keep it around please do.
If it is going to be a financial burden, then it has to go.
Keep it if you can, because of the past memories and any potential future memories/stories you COULD have.

I've owned 7 original ones and 1 heavily tricked out 1600S with porche engine, tranny, brakes, modded suspension etc...
If you can afford to fix er up, go for it. Get some VW magasines and check out what you can do to improve this darling. If your good with it you can still get years of pleasure out of her. Hence my 1958 model is still driving around and going strong.
