Insurance

Ok, so I want to modify my '06 ZX5. Not sure what I'm going to do, because first I need a company to cover my ass. Right now I'm with Meemic, but they don't allow engine or suspension modifications. What companies are out there that'll cover a 16 year old with a modded car?

none really, if one does, they're going to charge you hella extra
i just get regular insurance and if for some my car explodes or i get into an accident, my mods are a loss but at least the car is still covered, and yes, the company will still insure the car itself, just not the mods.

i had a decently modded neon in o4 that was totalled, the mods had no matter in what i got from them, they paid me what they said the car was worth with no if ands or buts about it.

You can get an independant appraisal of the cars value, and most insurance companies will respect that, but they will charge u up the but w/ premiums for it!!

if your 16 your best bet is to wait a few years not get into any trouble with the law, and then mod your car, i know you dont want to do this, i wanted to do the same when i was 16 but its your best bet for now and will save you money in the long run on both parts, insurance, possible appraisal, and so on.

at 16 if you get pulled over in a moded car, chances are the cop is gonna stick it to you, if your still stock the cop might let you go, that just kinda the way i look at it

As an insurance claims professional, I believe I can answer your question.

First - read your policy, particularly the part about "Physical Damage to your vehicle" (assuming you pay for that coverage).

Generally, if the policy says something is EXCLUDED, then it's written in stone and whatever it is - it's on you. If the policy places a LIMIT on aftermarket equipment, there's also no way to get around that one. (Your policy DECLARATIONS PAGE, which decribes the actual coverages you elected to pay for, and the limits, should also indicate the limit of your aftermarket coverage.)

The policy itself also would have language indicating what is, or is not, covered. Read the policy carefully, and if you do not understand something, call the company and talk to a representative. (Remember - if what some 'representative' says contradicts what the policy says - the policy is the deciding factor.)

If you happen to be lucky enough to have a policy that doesn't address aftermarket equipment, then you could have an 'out' (I wouldn't bet on this, though - you've probably missed something in reading the policy )

If something is not specifically limited or denied, then the policy could be open to interpitation.

If you do have limitations on the aftermarket stuff, it generally works this way when a claim is made:

For example, let's say you have an aftermarket exhaust sytem on your Focus, and it's cost is $750.00. You have an 'aftermarket' limitation of $1,000 on the policy.
-- You get rear-ended (car is repairable) and the damage includes the exhaust system. Let's say the factory exhaust system costs $400.00. The insurance company would pay the entire cost for the aftermarket system, but you would have used up $350.00 ($750 minus $400)of your $1,000 aftermarket coverage. You would only have $650.00 of aftermarket coverage left for that claim.

Another claim - someone stole your $2,200.00 aftermarket stereo system. The factory system, let's say costs $350.00. The insurance company is going to tender their $1,000 aftermarket coverage, and that's it. You're left holding the bag for $1,200 of your stereo system.

Hope this helps - let me know if you need more specific information.
