lost keys

so i think i may have my only set of keys sitting at the bottom of a 90 foot deep lake... this presents a slight problem for me... does anyone know how much ford charges for a new key and what do i have to show them to prove this is my car?

Ouch! Not sure on the cost, but I would imagine if you have the current registration and insurance that would be proof enough. If your registration is locked in the car, I'd try to find a copy of my insurance. I know mine has my VIN listed on it, so that would at least show ford that it's your car and would help them to make a key to unlock it. From there, you would have to get the key programmed to start the car. That will be a little costly, but if you don't have a spare set anywhere, then you don't have much choice.

Keys are somewhere between $75-$85. Programming them is between $35-$45.

My mistake, I thought it was more than that. Acutally that's not too bad, considering. The only problem is you'd need two keys if you ever want to make any spares on your own.

I just happened to think: you didn't happen to have your keyless remote attatched to the key ring did you?

Yeah 1998 and newer ford cars, the keys can be cut from the VIN, a non car starting key will cost about $4.00, And your pretty much screwed if you dont have a spare key. No spare key means the dealer will have to get you a PATS (Personal Anti Theft System) key which will probably cost around $80.
Then since that key won't be programmed to your car (you need the spare to do that), you will have to be towed to your nearest dealership. Than it will probably cost around $40 to program the key to work. They have to go in with a special computer and program the new key to the cars code.

HAVE FUN

Howd the keys end up there? and howd you get to the interweb? That sucks man, good luck on proof of ownership. Id assume that if you got the FD to open the doors, reg and insurance papers plus ID would show enough for Ford to make a key.

This is why I have a third copy in my safe. If you bought your car new, make a copy now while you can. If you only have 1 key, well, I wish I had better advice.
