08 Fuel Mileage?

Curious what some other 08 owners are seeing for fuel mileage. My 08 gets horrible fuel mileage, about 25-27 on the average. I confirmed this by actual mileage to fuel testing. The message center says about 30-31 mpg, but it's wrong (even pretty poor at that number too).

I traded in a beautiful Ford 500 for this car for BETTER gas mileage, not the same (my AWD 500 got 25 mpg).

Car is all stock with about 4k miles. Tire pressures are good, air filter still clean.

I used to get around 28-29 MPG. I've since added a Steeda SRI and get around 31-32 MPG and I drive with a pretty heavy foot.

I get around 28-29 with a mix of city and highway driving. This is what the instrument panel tells me, I have yet to calculate it out myself. Next tank I'm going to start doing this and I'll report back.

This gas mileage thing is hard to figure. On this site I've seen figures from 17-47mpg. Obviously the true figure is between those two numbers, and probably depends on driving habits, and any after-market mods (assuming the car is running normal with clean filters, etc).

Since I got my '06 a few months ago, I've been less than impressed with the mileage. Mine constantly returns 25-26mpg.....automatic with the AC on during mixed driving (very conservative).

Don't be surprised if the mileage you report stays about at that level.....

I only have 800 miles on my '08 so far. It is an automatic. My first tank was 37.3mpg, even tho the mileage computer said 39.5mpg. This tank which I should fill today is saying 39.1mpg so far. I drive about 85% highway @ 55mph. I do not go over 2300 rpms on take-offs. Better mileage than my '07 ZX3 was getting, best tank with it was usually around 34mpg. Going by watching the mileage bar graph readout, when you take off you really have to be easy on it, or the mpg's just are not gonna be there. I am always the last one leaving from redlights, but I am enjoying my MPG's!!!

My '08 only has just over 800 miles on it. My first tank was 37.3mpg, computer showed 39.5mpg. Mine is an automatic, I drive about 85% highway @ 55mph. Going by the MPG gauge you really have to keep the RPM's low when you take-off. I try to keep mine below 2300. Really tough, because 2nd & 3rd gear usually want to go higher. I should be filling up today, computer is showing 39.1mpg so far this tank. I have not tried comparing how much speed affects mpg's on my '08, but on my '07 ZX3 that I had, if you went over 60mph the mileage tanked really bad. Pretty much the best I could get out of that car was 34mpg.

Lemme just say, in my '05 I get 33mpg when I want to, with mixed driving. Last week I got 24mpg, because I had new tires and played with them hard all week. The car itself is only a (small?) part of gas mileage. I had to retrain myself after driving a 300hp coup that I drove hard for 10 years before I got that 33+ mpg on the Focus, but it was worth it. Take a look at your habits, adjust them, and you will immediately see a big difference.

There is a break in period for these engines. Ford is producing the Duratec with very close bearing clearances as compared to earlier engines. The cam bearings for example were like .0013 if my memory is correct. From what I observed, their clearances were closer to that of race engines than daily drivers.

When I first started driving my 05 I thought about selling it because it barely got better mileage than my 94 3.0 5 spd Aerostar. Now I get 28-30 with the AC on and running horrible E10 fuel. I've seen as good as 36 when doing all highway miles at 55 mph.

Give it 5-6k miles and see if your mileage improves- use the old method of filling the tank and dividing the gallons into the miles on the trip odometer to double check your mpg readout on the gauges. If the mileage does not improve, then try cleaning your MAF using methods recommended in our HOW-TO archive. One of our FF's reported horrible fuel economy for years, then finally decided to take advice to clean his MAF. Afterwards, he got much better fuel economy. It's possible that dust accumulated in the MAF during shipping or production.

Also, run your own experiment comparing fuel from local providers. Run at least 2 tanks with every different station within your driving range. I've noticed as much as a 3 mpg difference between different fuels. It's difficult to say which fuel is best for all Focis because there can be differences like old tanks in the ground that we can't logically claim nationwide. If you want to take it to the next level, try using a $/mile comparison as well to see which fuel is cheaper for you to run, and test other octane levels from the fuel company or station that gives you the best gas. I also recommend to test different stations which have the same brand of fuel because some stations have old tanks that can be contaminated with water.

Best wishes, Alex.

I have an 08 SE 5-sp. I have been averaging 500+km on 3/4 of a tank. Usually I fill up with a quarter tank left, about 36-38L per fill. Most of the driving is city, I have a 17km trip to work, bumper to bumper traffic with a few km of 80km/h stretches. I have not gotten under 500km per fill since I got the car. Car has 6600km now, just did my first oil change and I am using Castrol syntec 5W-20. Milage should get a little better now.
