K&N Filter, UK or the US?

Hi, im a new user with a 2003 Ford Focus 1.6. Im interested in changing the standard air filter for a K&N air filter.

The advantages are apparantly, more power, greater fuel economy and finally it is better for the engine.

The model i need is the K&N 33-2819, which in the UK is around 30 ($60)
but fortunately im heading over the states in a month or so.

My question is, is the K&N 33-2819 available in the US and is it any cheaper? If so, where would i be looking to buy one?

Thanks.

Yes, I am seeing most online for $31.50. You may even have it shipped to you for cheaper than $60. Just go to any auto parts store and they can order it for you if you will be here that long.

Thats the same K&N the American Foci use. Ive got one Installed. I paid about 40 for mine 2 years ago. I was looking at some Auto Parts Stores Online shops and was seeing $32-37 US for the filter. Any good auto parts store should have it (Autozone, Advance Auto, NAPA, O'Riley's, etc.)

Sorry this is slightly off topic, but ive just been reading some reviews on the air filter. There have been concerns with oil spilling onto the MAF on some cars which cause more hassle than it is worth. And there is also the issue of there being an imbalance as there is more air but not extra fuel which causes the engine to wear out.

Is this the odd bad experience or a common problem? Im not particularly technically minded, and would prefer as little hassle as possible. Is a K&N filter substantially better than an OEM one?

seeing as you have one daemon, i was wondering if u had any bad experiences?

I have not heard of the oil problem you mention, nor experienced it, perhaps one of the more experienced members has. I believe that when you clean it, you only oil the "bottom" of the filter, which would stop oil from getting on the MAF.

K&Ns are supposed to flow better than Stock filters, and also trap dirt better due to the oil on the filter. Plus you get the reusable feature, where you can clean/re-oil/re-install the filter, which for me is a plus personally. The increased flow that you get should not be enough to harm the engine or do anything to the MAF or fuel delivery, aside from a slight increase in fuel economy.

Thats pretty much a myth. K&N has a display that they take to events and its sole purpose is to show that even over-oiling doesnt do that. They intensionally way over-oil a filter and place in this machine that generates alot of airflow onto a completely white pice of paper and i have never seen a drop get on the paper.

There probably talking about excess soap to clean the filter getting to your MAF, I have been using K&N for years and never had a problem with them.

I'm surprised that its the same model used on the UK 1.6L as the US 2L. The 1.4L & 1.6L is the Zetec SE out of the fiesta and the 1.8L and 2.0L are the Zetec E out of the mondeo. See wikipedia page, it says they share nothing but name.
