WTF?! OIl question

I've had my focus now approx 1 month, loving it completely. Since I've had it, I have done a few minor mods and such. I hadnt really checked the condition of the engine though.

It is a 2000 1.6 Zetec with 100k miles, everything sounds sweet. But my fuel consumption is really poor. Everyone says its cause im young (18) and must have a heavy foot. But, on the last top up of fuel (cant afford full tanks) I put in 20 litres and have driven economically, changing gear at approx 2500rpm and have still only been getting 29mpg

So today i checked air filter and oil, as should have had a service when i bought it, however the air filter was dirty, and the oil, however clean, was almost epty . So instead of being out enjoying my car, Im here worrying about it going wrong, and MPG.

Will having little oil have done much damage to the engine in around about a month/500ish miles?
What oil will i need to top up?
Will probably get a replacement drop in filter as I have another 2 months warranty (only 300 coverage though).
I cant held but feel like I've been ripped off though, as I bought this from a garage, and should have had a service, and paid 2495 for the car, when i could've got a better deal privately, but thought i should get a more "trustworthy" car from a garage.

Thanks, if it is burning oil, what are common symptoms/tell tale signs? Doesnt seem smoky at all.

OUCH!!
Thing is it should be close to 40mpg, my dad gets 40ish with his auto, so driving so sensibly as i have been should get at least 35 i would have thought. Just sucks, cause i cant really afford to run it at 29mpg.
