Thumbs down Test drove a Chevy Aveo today.

My girlfriend is in the market for a car. Hers is an 89 Chevy Corsica... reliable old car, just turning 240K on the clock, but the tranny's finally about to go and she needs something reliable. Unfortunately, since it's lasted that long (and been good to her the whole time she's had it,) she's got some pretty high expectations of Chevy. Given the past few years worth of Chevy's economy cars, this is a bad thing...

I've fought the good fight trying to get her into a Focus, but it isn't flying with her. So I'm trying to steer her in the direction of something good, like a VW or the like. But today she saw a blue Chevy Aveo and wanted to check it out, so she took me to ask the right questions and keep the salespeople off her back.

It was a manual, and somehow I thought that might redeem it's pitifully, balefully inadequate powerplant. No, the 1.6L Ecotec (rated for 103HP and 107TQ) managed to suck balls even put to the ground though a five speed. Speaking of which, said five speed felt sloppier than Jenna J.'s nethers after a long day of honest work. The car had no useable torque until about 5Krpms. And at that point the engine noise was unbearable.

The ride was okay, but at the expense of some truly sloppy handling. It didn't track for shit on the highway, in moderate winds at 75mph I was all over the road. The first corner I cut at speed, I was curious to see if it compared at all to my completely stock rear sway-less ZX3, and nearly rolled the damn thing off the side of the exit ramp. It was appalling. The body roll was huge, if there was a sudden road hazard to avoid at speed, it would have been impossible to evade it. If I did, it would have been impossible to regain control.

The interior was cheap. Like... way cheaper than a Focus interior, which is pretty cheap. The driver's side door handle (a plastic insert on the panel) pulled free of the door, every time we got in. This car only had about four thousand miles on it.

The Aveos kind of remind me of the Focus because of the shape and wheelbase and such, or I would never have looked at it. Now I'm sorry I did. You'd think GM would take some pointers in the compact car market from their rival company with the best selling small car in the world, but I guess not.

Ladies and Gentleman, I give you the Chevy Aveo. Avoid it like the plague.

Well what did you expect from a car that costs less than 10 grand new? IMO they're just ugly as hell, I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole . Try getting her into a Cobalt, they're kinda nice, not too expensive either. Or a MKIV Jetta/Golf/Passat or a new Rabbit if you can. Or maybe if she wants to spend some coin...a nice BMW 1 or 3 series! lol

Well, it's also known around the world as the Daewoo Kalos. If that doesn't squash it I don't know what will.

Check the wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Aveo

I guess it could be worse... I don't know how though. The only thing I've heard bad about them is that they don't get that great gas mileage for thier size. After having an '89 Corsica.. guess she's not too worried about impressing her friends.

Hey man, if that's what makes the woman happy, go with it. At least she doesn't have her heart set on a Mercedes S class. The car she wants will only set you back $10K and she'll drive it till the wheels fall off. Sounds like a pretty cheap ride all and all.

In the sub-compact segment I would take a serious look at the Honda Fit. It will have a more efficient and stronger motor, better basic equipment, nicer stereo, etc. It does cost a few grand more, but it will retain it's value a lot better too. Either the Yaris and Scion xA (or whatever they call the new one now) would be a decent second choice. My dad had a Toyota Echo that got 45 mpg... and I've seen a few lowered with rims that look decent (or maybe 1/4 decent).

True, I never thought of the Fit...IMO they are pretty damn cool lookin. Like Stivo said, the Xa, Xd, Yaris (ugly but cool at the same time ) are all other choices. OR she could go with a deisel...net her 40 MPGs if she wants some gas savings

Haha, I've tried to steer her down the diesel route as well, but she's got this stupid idea that diesel is more expensive.

OH YEAH! I forgot, the damn thing only got 34mpg highway WITH a five-speed, and GET THIS... it's only a 1.6L motor! WTF CHEVY?

Cobalt is next on the list for test drives. I drove a few rentals a while back, was pretty impressed for the price of 'em. The biggest trick is she's got about an $8,000 budget. (Honey, just buy a Focus already...)

We've been together for six years and the wedding's coming. I know it's wrong of me to wanna force her hand but I just wanna be a part of an all-Focus family. XD
