Talking New Focus Coupe Review :)

____REVIEW____

Hi guys! Nice forum, tons of great info, been poring over it for the past hour or so.

Last Saturday, I picked up a Red Focus Coupe S 5spd. It's a base model more or less, though it does have a very nice MP3/CD Audio system, and a jack for an Ipod or whatever. Has crank windows and no power locks, odd for an '08 to be so stripped, didn't even come with floor mats lol.

Impressions so far; the looks are an acquired taste for sure. It's growing on me bit by bit, but it does seem a bit tall. I'm 6'3" 200lbs, and it's a comfortable vehicle overall, though reaching behind yourself to grab the seatbelt is a bit odd. The car drives very smooth, and it's a great around-town car.

Road noise is supposedly reduced from previous gen, but it's still noticeable enough, far in excess of my previous LeSabre, and Preludes. Also when I'm outside of the car while it's idling, the motor sounds strange to me, sort of a clickety-clackety noise. Definitely not the silky mild burr of my Prelude of years back. Under the hood, things are clean and simply laid out. I imagine that some maintenance would be a nightmare, as there's not very much room for a guy like me to reach around and get at things, but my warranty is quite good and I'll just trust the mechanics for 95% of the stuff that needs to be done with it.

Power is very adequate, though a mild upgrade would be nice. The '08 2.0 motor is up to 140hp with the reworked intake/exhaust OEM system. There doesn't seem to be any flat spot or gap in the power curve, it just comes on smoothly up to redline. When driven mildly, it is still quick enough not to leave you lagging in traffic. Which brings me to :

Fuel economy. Hmm. The jury is out on this one, I got about 280 miles from my first tank, and I was driving pretty hard city driving through most of it. I should have paid attention during my next fillup to see how many gallons I used for those 280, but I guess I'll do that later. I'm guessing low 20s for spirited driving. I've been driving granny style the past couple days to see if it makes a huge difference, and as far as I can tell, it has. I've gone quite a few miles with the fuel gauge not budging.

Interior is quite nice, and the controls are VERY well laid out and easy to use. The assembly was very good, fit and finish excellent, and I've yet to locate a flaw. Visibility is likewise excellent, save for the extremely large headrests in both front seats. Backseat is adequate for around-town trips for average-sized adults, though road trips would be punishment indeed. Front seats are very well-designed, with good lateral support. Aside from having to manipulate the front seats forward to gain access, it's convenient enough putting my 13-month old into his car seat, and carrying him out at our destination. The trunk is cavernous for a car of this segment.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. Overall I'm quite happy with the car. I'd love to hear from other '08 owners, as well as any other comments/questions from the Focus community here.

Cliffs : nice little car!

Welcome!

You will see better mpg once the engine breaks in. My 02 had me wondering, but came around soon enough. Good to have a new member aboard. Get us some pics! Very nice review.

Thanks guys! I'll borrow a digital camera and take a variety of pics soon. I will update the review to answer any questions that anyone may have about the '08 model, or take closeup photos of any particular area that someone wants attention on.

Yes, welcome! I really didn't like the 08 Focus when it came out. It took months for me to come around a little. It looks pretty decent. Red or Blue are definitely my favorite colors for it.
