Break in instructions

I bought my 2004 ZX3 bout a week and half ago and they never gave me break in instructions for the engine i had always hear change the oil after 500 mile and its aproching that mark so what should i do and the matinace instructions say change it every 5000 mile that just dont make sense to me so any info would be great

Break-in instructions vary from person to person. I've read some places suggestiong just to go all out immediately, and its better. I'm not sure on that.

Me, I go easy on it the first 1000, as in below 4k RPMs, and trying to vary RPMs as much as possible on the highway. Then I do an oil change at 1000, then 5000, and every 5000 from there. Thats just my opinion, and doesn't nessecary mean its the best. But both of my cars seemed to like it.

i was always told that oil should be changed every 3000 miles and everycar that i have ever drove needed oil changed then (92 mustang and a 95 saturn) what make the focus different

you don't wan't to race around in it for awhile, but there is no real break in period anymore. Follow the owners manual and you will be fine. I didn't change the oil for the first time until the recomended 5k. I change it every 5k because my driving doesn't fall into the severe service catagory. modern machining eliminates most of the old reasons to break in a engine. You will be fine if you follow there recomendations. they want the car to last too.. especially since you have a 100k powertrain warrentee.
