Need some Advice

So I kinda messed up my sister's 2001 Ford Focus. I punctered the oil filter yesterday changing her oil without knowing it. Well today driving down the freeway the engine went BOOM and died. Got it towed to a shop and they said the oil was completly gone and the engine is probably all messed up inside. It was gonna cost another 3k to put in a new engine and we still have 4k left to pay off on it. I'm 90% sure the insurance company won't cover it. So what options do I have now and what is my best bet? I feel really bad since I've been working on cars for a long time and let such a little thing like that slip by me. Oh well any advice would greatly be appreciated.

Well if you think it's worth keeping and want to put a new engine in to keep it running go for it. More money will end up being paid in the long run if the car is gotten rid of and a new car is purchased.

Insurance will pay for it if you can convince them that the puncture was due to road debris or vandalism. Good luck.
