Okay, well if u want overall i would say a 2003-04 svt eap. if u just want performance i would say a 2.3L duratec. not sure if it comes in the hatch though, im sure someone will correct me if im wrong.
Tom just made a turbo kit for the duratec. really putting out some nice numbers.

Hands down either an 03 or 04 ZX3 with the 2.3L in it.

Thus, I have a bare bones Zetec

is the 5-6k for the car alone?

the 2.3L '04 pzev is a good option.....but if the 5-6k is for the car AND all of the mods, the ur gonna need to keep ur zetec and mod that out.

^^^ Couldn't agree more...

Second choice would be a zetec if you are going to boost it, as there are more options.

i vote either the 03-04 svt if you can find one for that price, or the 03-04 2.3l with manual trans.
if you can find a 2.3l with no power options it will be a pretty good starting point and be pretty light.
the svt already has great suspension, brakes, 6spd trans, and a great engine, but does not respond much to bolt ons since it has already been engineered - so in the end building an svt can be cheaper depending on your goals.
i think you should do research on both vehicles and decide which fits more into what you want out of the car
when you say "track days" what do you mean? 1/4 mile? auto-x? the svt will probably be the best move for auto-x where as the 6 spd trans wont be so great in the 1/4mile...
