I Drove a Mazdaspeed 3 today...

Yes, it's true, I drove an MS3 today at the dealership at about 11:00 this morning and it saddens me that I had to leave the dealership in my SVT.

I really really enjoyed this car a lot. From the second the sales person fired it up, to the first time I opened the door, it just seemed like a kickass car. It was a black GT model with the HID headlights and leather wrapped seats.

So what was it like on the road? Well, it has been raining for two days straight, and the road was pretty slick, but the MS3 felt completely composed and did not even lose grip once. As you may or may not know, first gear is pretty short...about 30 MPH, but it makes second gear much easier to start in. The powerband is interesting because it doesn't feel too torquey until about 1800 RPMs when, if you mash it about 3/4 of the way down, the car just explodes with power!! I went from 20 to almost 60 in seemingly no time at all, but then the power just seems to die at about 5500 RPMs, so it is essentially perfect for every day driving, but it would take some getting used to for competitive driving or stoplight to stoplight spurts, but it is DAMN POWERFUL. Overall it is much more civil than my SVTf, which feels like a toyota tercel as far as torque is concerned. The suspension feels about on par with my SVT..perhaps even a little less jarring, and the steering is very precise and firm. Cornering is as good or better than my SVT from what I could feel, although it did not feel quite as "nimble" as silvia does, probably due to the weight difference, but it felt more confident if that makes any sense. Fit and finish are superb, better than any honda or toyota I have ever sat in. The dash controls were interesting and ergonomically correct..there was even a button to display the outside and inside temperatures and a cool climate control feature. BTW it was a brisk 48 degrees when I got on the road. The dash layout was sexy and the seats were comfortable. There was a CENTER CONSOLE which is something I've grown accustomed to not having. The doors closed softly and had european looking seals, and the hatch did not flex and wobble like most ZX foci. The disparity in quality between the SVT and MS3 is immense..I mean there is absolutely NO COMPARISON. I would even venture a guess that this remains true when compared with the 2008 Focus, though I have really no frame of reference since I've never driven or sat in the new focus, but for just a couple grand more for a Mazda3, I would see absolutely no reason to ever purchase another Focus unless they did some serious revamping. And the MS3 is in a class all its own.

So I drove it around for about 15 minutes to get a feel of how the car performed and then we went back to work out some numbers. This is when I realized there was no possibility of it happening. I owe about 12,000 on Silvia, which I found it is worth just over $6500 for trade-in ( ford), and with a window sticker of $23,999 for the MS3 GT, I'de be looking at 566.87/month for 60 months if I were to plop down $3,000 that I don't have. Well I pay $250.00/month for my car.

So, all in all, I really enjoyed driving the MS3. Unfortunately I could not justify more than doubling my monthly payments. I think Silvia will be the last Ford I ever buy though, and I only hope she will get my through my last 12 months of college. By then I hope i'll be able to afford something fancy and new will blow the MS3 out of the water in every aspect.

Cheers!

I like the review and I would expect as much, though for some reason I have NEVER had good luck with Mazda. I just don't know what it is, it's like there's some stigma Mazda has created against me. Always a large, stupid problem.

But I would love to drive one of those...haven't looked yet, but does the MS3 just have a turbocharged Duratec or what?

Test drive the MS6 to. My dad was about to buythe MS3 but we tested the MS6 and he bought it instead. You can launch the shit out of it. Both the MS3 and 6 have the 2.3Turbo. Both are great cars. The MS3 is a little rougher ride and lighter. The MS6 is a total sleeper and has awd. I smoked so many cars at Red Lights and they never see it comming. The MS6 def. has the sleeper thing going on.

My bro got a MS3 about a month and a half ago. 30 days after taking delivery of it, an idiot in a snow plow hit it in while it was parked in his office parking lot. :( He hadn't even made a payment yet. It's going to get a final clear coat tomorrow and he should be good to go. I <3 MS3s....

Ya, The intercooler is on top of the engine. All the CAI does is takes out the stock airbox. It makes the engine alot louder so Im guessing it takes out a resinator too.

I've driven a MS3 and NO factory intercooler, small turbo but the CAI does help with the sound a little.
