New here, looking for feedback on 2008

Hey everyone, I have noticed that most people don't seem to like the '08s here. This isn't surprising I guess, its happened over the years on nearly every car message board I've ever used any time a new model is released. So I'm not letting that get to me TOO much for now.

Anyhow, I am looking to buy a Focus as a commuter car. I currently have an 07 Toyota FJ for a daily driver and I'm pushing $600/month in gas thru the thing. Its gotten ridiculous so I'm looking to get rid of it before we see gas go even higher. I have an 07 Mustang GT as a weekend toy, so I'm not out to make a statement or impress with my daily driver (or modify it). I would prefer if it wasn't too cheesy, but ultimately price and MPG are most important.

Does anyone out there have an 08, and if so what do you think about the Sync system after using it, as well as real-world MPG, comfort, etc? Modding aside (yes, bear with me you's :P), is it a reasonably decent car for a commuter vehicle? I have looked at the Sentra, Civic, Impreza, Lancer, Suzuki, Hyundai, and Scion but keep coming back to the Focus due to price vs features. Also, at 6'4" tall, I actually fit in the coupe quite well which is something most of the others on that list can't provide. I would be buying an SES with "everything", and an automatic for the long commutes.

Thanks for any input in advance! If you're interested as fellow Ford brothers and sisters, here are a couple pics of the Mustang. Shes running a JLT intake, BamaChips Race tune, and SLP Powerflo mufflers along with some decals I added. Nothing special I guess, but shes pretty quick. ;)

http://www.focusfanatics.com/news/view.asp?linkid=317

Back in September I was fortunate enough to go to the Wayne Assembly Plant and take a tour and test drive the new Focus. I wrote a review of it that was on the main page for a while.

BTW, nice stang And welcome to FocusFanatics

stang looks beautiful!....all my buddies have different stangs from different generations....its awsome

im actually lookin to get a 03/04 cobra.... i drive an 04 SVT focus as a daily commuter and I LOVE MY SVTF!

if youre just lookin for a commuter, a focus is a great way to go....any generation really...plenty of room, very practical, very efficient not too complicated/expensive to work on or get replacement parts

not to get off subject but how do the SLP's sound?

Thanks for the link and replies! The SLPs are great. I noticed that hardly anyone runs them (most run the loudmouths) so I decided to try em for grins. They have very little drone and are quite loud. The sound is low and gargly (is that a word?). You can see straight thru the mufflers to the other side. Fit and finish is very nice, highly recommended!

I have a new SES 08 that I love so far.

I had an 05 ZX3 as well

Details:
I have about 1000 miles on it and the average commute MPG is 27.6 I drive 27 miles each way to work, and it is about 60% highway.

dont know the straight highway # as I have not been on any trips yet.

I love the sync system, easy to use, no training to your voice, just command it what to do ant is does it. if you have a BT phone you will like it even more, I have my phones paired to it and the hands free it great, I have been told that the volume on the person your calling is a bit low, so I talk louder in the car to help, but it is a great system.

the interior is about the same comfort as the 05 , the cup holders are in a much better spot, the 05 ones were a pain in the butt, they were low and in front of the shifter and you could not put a large drink in them, the new ones are right where they should be, in the console behind the shifter.

I wish the MPG was a little higher than that, but I know it'll vary. Good feedback on Sync, thanks! I keep reading rave reviews on Sync from reviewers, however was wondering what people thought that actually use it all the time.

If you do that much driving, take a look at the Prius. A buddy of mine got one, gets amazing mileage, and my other 6'+ 300lb+ friends all fit in it fine. Much roomier that it looks, and how little he pays for gas is amazing.

Yeah well, I know how it is. I've watched the Subaru community go up in arms over each redesign of the WRX/STi, then eventually everyone accepts the new model, mods are released and all is quiet again. I don't expect this place to be any different.

I appreciate the feedback I've gotten so far, so thanks to you guys. I understand there are many people here who "hate" the '08, however I am not looking to buy this thing because I love the way it looks, or because I have plans of doing anything to it. I need a cheap, comfortable, reliable, and heavily optioned daily driver that won't cost me $600/month in gas.

I looked at the Prius and liked it, well, as much as you can like a Prius... however they are much more expensive than the Focus, have less equipment that I want (Sync, Sirius, etc) and Toyota isn't budging on the price at all. It's MSRP or nothing on that, and Toyota can get away with it. I can get the SES fully loaded for at or below invoice from the dealer I bought the 'stang from...

I'm very happy with my 08.....

I'm only getting about 24-26mpg but all I do is short distance city driving.

The wifey has an 08 and does all highway driving 35miles one way to work and she's getting between 29-33mpg depending on traffic and her speed.
