Import an ST

Has anybody actually tried to import or drive a Focus ST over the boarder? These cars are a serious bargain at 25k USD, and could probably be had for less if you bought one using USD. I'm pondering the possibility of this, seeing as you could register it as a Focus ST, which technically does exist in the states, but is a gimp compared to the euro ST.

What will hurt you is passing the emmissions testing.

If it can pass in the European countries it sells in, why wouldn't it pass here?
Besides I'm not talking about doing this, or someone doing this on the completely legal side of things. Only a Focus enthusiast would know you're not really supposed to have the car anyway. There are ways around emissions testings, and usually involve twenty dollar bills.

The US is WAY more restrictive in emmissions and crash rating than any other country out there.

Thats why we always get detuned cars from europe instead of cars they way they we meant to run.

you can do it, its not really worth it, youd need new glass, and have to modify the exhaust, but if you dont have testing then who cares, and you can get a st vin number to register it so yea, go for it, but no one has done it, and itd be cheaper to go to mexico and get it and drive it home

also this subject has been beaten to DEATH!!!

I don't think you'd be able to just register the car as a US market ST. More likely, you'd have to wiggle around the law and do something like buy a junked US market ST, put its VIN plate in the Euro ST and register the Euro ST as the US market ST. All of which would be highly illegal...you'd effectively be defrauding a government agency and committing insurance fraud, as well as driving a non-DOT compliant vehicle. If they ever caught you you'd probably be facing a stiff jail term as well as hefty fines.

Maybe if you had some deep pockets you could get the DOT/NHTSA to do formal testing on the Euro ST and get saftey certification that would allow you to legally register the car in the US, but I'm pretty sure that requires five cars for them to smash during testing without any guarantee they will pass the test. I know its been done on other imported cars, like the Nissan Skyline. It would certainly be easier to do, since you can drive down to Mexico and buy one instead of having to go to Europe and then have the car shipped over.

That's more along the lines of what I was thinking, just drive it over.

Actually as far as the DOT goes safety wise, from what I have read, you don't have to pass, you have to pay a tax if you don't and that's it. There is bound to be a legal loophole for these things. My best guess would be a tuner in Mexico that could basically rebadge it theirs and resell it to you. Cars that don't make up a large enough percentage of the market are not forced to follow a lot of the guidelines that Porsche (at over 6% market share) have to follow. I don't think they crash test F430s yet people in the states have them and drive them.

Must be nice there yoohoo. In Texas we get 2 years on a new car, then its yearly from that point forward... Fortunately, its really easy to find a someone to "pass" you cause my first Focus never would have passed on its own (race header FTW).
