Why young people buy foreign cars

First off, I know people may have posted this before, but I haven't seen the topic in a while. On my usual bi-weekly hunt for cars I can't afford (well, I don't want to afford), I came to a conclusion. Not a single damn American car company sells a 6cyl performance version of a car with a standard transmission. Not everyone wants a turboed 4 cyl, or the gas mileage of a V8.

Pontiac G6 GXP - fast freakin, great looking car IMO - no standard
Dodge Avenger 6cyl - no standard
Ford Fusion 6 cyl - no standard

My gosh this is irritating. No wonder young people buy foreign cars like the Acuras, Mazdas, Hondas, ext. There is a big market for this class of car. If there wasn't, I'm sure these foreign car companies wouldn't be producing them.

Oh yeah, and don't forget about the Sebring, Malibu, and Aura. All not available with standard transmission. What a shame.

Its a shame, Id imagine a "SVT" fusion with the new 3.5 and a six speed would do pretty well. Then again, most young people dont want 4 door midsize sedans, they usually go smaller.

I agree. It's a total shame. I had to freaking order my wagon with a manual transmission.

On the other hand- I have found that Japanese made mini-vans with floor like shifters mounted on the dash somewhere are COMPLETELY FREAKING STUPID!!! I have no idea what Japanese have against column shifters, but I find it totally stupid of them not to integrate such a simple and useful design. With all the shift by wire designs- where's a pushbutton shifter? Anything except this awkward looking stalk sticking up from the dash.

PS: My poor mother looked at every mini-van on the market recently, and turned on the wipers and sprayed the windshield on every Japanese model.

They ended up getting a deal on an 03 Odyssey, but it has a stupid shifter sticking up out of the dash. Dad still drives a Ford F-150.

08 Cadillac CTS...300hp direct injection 3.6L, comes in either a 6speed auto or a 6speed standard.

Also the thing is america has only been recently accepting a 6cly as a performance engine....they'd rather throw in a V8, where as, how many v8s do you see in imports?...not many. Also sometimes the hi-performance v6's still get similar horsepower to a v8. Most hi-performance v6 engines are still getting sub 20mpg city, i see alot of 18 and 19 mpg. And compared to many v8s 16-18 mpg thats not much of a difference. There are some v8 engines id rather have anyway, as they will also give you more tq compared to hp. For example the 4.6L in the mustang you get the same power of a performance v6...well not all of them cause alot of v6 engines are still not breaking 300hp, theres only a few. But also the 4.6L runs off of regular gas, compared to the premium you have to put in all the hi-performance v6 engines.

But honestly, the reason imports have such a big market has nothing to do with engine options. Its about great designs, reliable cars and good quality(for the most part)

My mom has a new Toyota Avalon... a big car that is very comfortable, fully loaded with a v6 and 17" wheels. It averages 29mpg.

Try that in an American car with similar stats.

The Cadillac is pretty pricey though. It is one VERY nice ride. I love those Caddys. You'll pay at least $33,000 dollars for the base model CTS. For some reason (at least with my experience), all the V6 cars I've driven have gotten more than what it's rated at. I don't know why this happens for me, maybe I'm lucky, but that's just my experience.

6 cyl engines today really do get close to the V8 power that we have been used to seeing. That's why I'm not sure why we aren't using that to our advantage to keep people back and buying US "made" vehicles. I don't have a problem with foreign car companies, but I would prefer to buy American if I can.

I don't think reliability is an issue with today's vehicles from the US. Take the Fusion for example, it had a better reliability rating than any other model in it's class last year.

That "awkward looking stalk sticking up from the dash" annoys me also. I like the ergonomics of American cars better. I guess my body has longer legs and a shorter torso than usual, and it seems like most foreign cars I've driven have things in my reach as easily.

I thought that the Fusion came with a standard trans. Hmm I guess my bad.

Think about who is driving these cars most of the time though.

Then again if they built that car people like us would buy them.
