general questions about Focus waranty

I am strongly considering buying a used Focus SVT. I am a little concerned about the semi-defective clutch it seemed to come with and the related premature need for clutch replacement issues.

I'm currently considering a 2003 Focus SVT that was built on 04/25/2003, purchased by its first (and only) owner on 04/19/2004, and now has 50,934 miles.

How good is the warranty that is left on this car? Would it possibly cover a replacement clutch due to the TSBs? If I wouldn't be eligible for a new clutch just because of the TSB, would I be eligible if it started showing a lot of wear soon?

No one? I pretty much wanted to make the decision on whether or not to buy this particular Focus today.

The warranty *may* cover a clutch replacement, but doubtful. The 5/100 powertrain will be in effect until 09, so you've got one more year of coverage there. The 5/100 powertrain covers just mechanical bits - syncros, engine bits, etc. It does not cover stuff like the o2 sensor or anything electronic.

The TSB is going to be at the service departments discretion. You may want to have the Oasis report pulled to find out if the TSB has already been performed. If you give Mike at Hillibish Ford a call he can take care of it for you. Just have the vin number handy. If it hasn't been performed and you go to a good dealership, most will take care of it. I'll p.m. you Mike's contact info.

So, the clutch would have definitely been covered even if it didn't seem to be worn out during the 3year/36k, but now it only *may* be covered. Do I understand this correctly?

iantm, you say getting clutch replaced now is doubtful. witchcitySVT, you feel most dealerships would take care of it?

Does it basically just depend on whether or not the clutch is clearly worn? I mean, is the situation that if the clutch doesn't grab the way a 50k clutch should then they probably would replace it due to the TSB. However, if there are no signs of wear they would probably not replace it despite Ford admitting design defect and TSB?

For this scenario - there are a bunch of things at play - the history of the car, the people working at the dealer, and the person authorizing the warranty claim within Ford. The chance is there, and if it hasn't been done before - then yes - it should be covered. If it has been done before, and/or you get a service advisor who is having a bad day - then probably not.
