Hi nelz, the PZEV means "Partial zero emissions vehicle", it refers to the ridiculously low (nearly zero) exhaust and vapor fumes that this engine puts out. It's a designation of how "clean" the car runs.

Oh and if you have a four door it's just the LX, no Z in there

PZEV is technically not the "kind" or family of the engine. it's simply a designation. technically, you have a Duratec engine that meets PZEV standards. it's just known as "the PZEV." ford will be coming out with other cars in the future that will also be PZEV, but they won't have the same engine as your focus LX (not ZLX!).

just visiting now....

You have a Focus 4-door LX (not ZLX, there is no such thing) with a 2.3L Duratec engine.

Head over to the Duratec section and READ if you want to learn

from a old article on the EV World website...

A PZEV is a vehicle that meets Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) standards. Every vehicle sold in the USA today meets the Tier-1 emission standards set by the DOE. To comply with SULEV standards, vehicles must produce 97% less hydrocarbons, 76% less carbon monoxide, 97% less nitrous oxides, and 90% less particulate matter than the Tier-1 standard. There are several vehicles being sold right now that are certified as SULEV by CARB. These include many alternate fuel vehicles like natural gas powered vehicles from Ford, Honda and Chrysler; gasoline-powered vehicles from Honda and Nissan; and a Hybrid from Toyota.

To achieve PZEV certification, a vehicle has to go beyond the SULEV emission standards. The manufacturer must eliminate evaporative emissions, and ensure that the vehicle will run cleanly for its entire projected life. Even if your car is just sitting in the driveway, it is still polluting. The source of this pollution is hydrocarbons emitted from the gas tank as gasoline slowly evaporates. To achieve PZEV certification, all evaporative emissions must be eliminated.

IMHO the hybrid tax credit should be changed to a non-polluting vehicle tax credit and extended to all SULEV or PZEV vehicles. Harumpf.
