Should I get it or not? Anyone know Volvo diesels?

I have a friend with a junkyard. Sitting in the back is a 91 Volvo 960 Turbo diesel. It hasn't been run in a while, and so there's no fuel in the engine right now. If there is any in the tank it's surely bad.

The condition of the car's body is good, good glass, no paint fade, the interior is classic old Volvo: The headliner has been falling out for a while and the previous owner ripped down the fabric long ago. The vinyl on the door panels is coming loose at the top of the panel. The only mechanical problems I have to deal with aside of potential old fuel and dry injectors is that it's missing a starter bolt.

I'm paying very little for the car, so it's not like it's a big expense. I'm just not sure if I'm going to be getting into some horrid repairs or not.

In the trade I made, I'll also soon be the proud owner of a 92 Sable with a bad intake manifold. That or the Volvo is going to end up being my wife's car. The Volvo is optional at the moment, I haven't decided, I'm waiting until I know more about Volvo diesels.

Thanks for any input.

The answer is simple. 302 swap. Jags that run has a complete manual on how to swap a ford engine into the 7/9 series RWD volvos. From what I hear, its a reletively easy swap too.

^^ Thanks, but I think the TD motor runs. The people ditched the car because of the interior falling apart and the starter went out. The starter has been replaced, but is missing a bolt because they pulled it and then things got lost. Believe it or not, this is fairly common that people screw up something and just go buy a new car to get over it. Then it sits and sits and sits, finally they call Charlie to come pick it up for a few $$$.

I have a feeling that the 2.4 turbo diesel engine will get better fuel economy than the 302, although I'm also sure that the 302 would be much more fun

Are you sure it's a 91 960? IIRC, the 960 didn't come to America until 1992 (it came out in Europe for 91 as the replacement for the 760. Also, if it is a 91 Volvo with a diesel - chances are that it's grey market or something someone put together - Volvo imported their last diesel to the U.S. in 1985 (in 240, 740, and 760 variants). The 960 came with a six cylinder gas engine in the U.S. (b6304 IIRC), with diesel variants elsewhere in the world.

The Volvo diesels were, as I recall, VW units that were decent when cared for. If you want more info, I would suggest checking this out http://swedishbricks.com/700900FAQ/FAQSummary1.html

Incredibly good and useful information there. I've owned four Volvo 700 series cars (same as the 900 series, but with some differences) and they're pretty solid hearty cars. As for the interior stuff - the headliners on the 700/900 series Volvos disintigrate after about ten years and the replacement is 1/8 of an inch fabric - not the 1/4 of an inch stuff that is commonly used.

They are great cars, but in order to be happy with one - you have to be willing and happy to turn a wrench. I miss mine. The gas powered turbo cars are fun. I've owned every powertrain and body variant of the 700 series save for the diesel and 16v gas motor.

I'd say go for the volvo these are rugged cars. I can confirm that the diesels are VW diesels, but as stated above they are good when cared for.

I had an 89 760 turbo for a few months while I was fixing my 02 focus after a wreck. I sold the Volvo, went back to driving the 02, and two weeks later the 02 had an electrical fire. I gave up on it and bought a new focus. In retrospect, I should have put it back into storage and got another sub $1k Volvo.

I frequently look on the local craigslist board and ebay for inexpensive Volvos to tinker with. Almost bought one a few months ago until my wife and I went over every aspect - the fact that the car was a five speed killed it. Any third car has to be something we both can drive and she won't learn how to drive stick.

(so if anybody knows of a super cheap - i.e. sub $500 volvo with an automatic transmission for sale near pittsburgh - let me know)
