Looking at used Focuses, got questions

Hi all,

I'm looking to trade my 2001 Dodge Stratus R/T straight up for a 2000 - 2002 Focus. I've seen several '00 Focuses (Foci???) in my price range with between 60 - 80k miles. I know that '00 was the first year for the Focus, and it's generally a good idea to avoid first year models. However, by the time these cars have gone over 50k miles I'd think that most of the recalls and other problematic parts would have been "worked out" by the previous owners - what do you think? What are things to watch out for when buying a used Focus? I'm ultimately looking at making the trade to increase my mileage, as I commute ~25 miles each way to work. I get about 24 - 25 in the Stratus - what should I expect in the Focus (automatic) considering that I drive ~62 mph on two-lane county highway >90% of the time? Thanks for any input.

John

stay away from the 2000-01 and early 02 foci they had several problems.

if your looking for and auto expect around 30mpg the ATX in the focus robs alot of power from the engine, to get better fuel economy i would go for a 5 spd,

my driving is mixed about 50/50 and i average around 30mpg with an intake and cat-back with my ATX so chances are you might get more driving mostly highway.

and to ff.com

Unfortunately the 00-02 cars still break down later on for the recalled parts.
Focus is a decent fuel efficient car. I get around 30-31 running e10 on the highway going 55-80 variably.
Expect around 26-28 mixing it up with highway, and 21-23 for pure city driving. At least that's what I get with my auto lol.
13 if you drive aggressively...

I'll say keep the Stratus R/T. That's a fast car.

Get a manual, better mileage and more control.

My 01 was perfectly reliable except for the fuel pump which was on its way out when I test drove it. Dealer took care of that for free.

I'd say aim for an 03 for best results (results may vary due to driver-mod)

as you said, all the bugs shoulda been worked out by now. 0n the 00-01 there is an extended warranty on the rear bearings to 100,000 miles due to something with the design the snow and salt get in and ruin them. other than that it should be good.

I'd say look into a 2002.5 (built on or after June 2002) or later. That's when they had 99% of the bugs worked out.
