Xcal2 > tuning > Questions

Wife and I have decided to purchase the Xcal2 flasher. We can go with the basic unit or the Pro version which allows you to create/modify custom 'tunes'. I have no background in 'tuning'. I understand the concepts of EFI management but have zero knowledge of the details....and the devil is in the details. So, starting out as a total newbie, how steep is the learning curve? I do not want to spend the additional money on something I would essentially never use.
Thanks

To my knowledge, the xcal2 comes with two tunes...the one that they set up for you, and the stock tuning. I think all you do is hook it up to the car, press a few buttons select what tune upload and go. There's no special work that you have to do yourself, everything is pre-set into the flasher.

If you have a automatic focus I recommend you get the sportier gear changing option, which will give your focus alot more response.

I think if you buy the pro-racer from focussport or tom you have to write your own fuel and spark tables, and it does NOT come with a pre-loaded tune. But you could probably ask them to load the xcal with a tune or two for 100 bucks on top of the pro-racer software.

I would definitely not recommend getting the pro-racer package unless you really do race the car and/or youre trying to push BIG power out of a turbo. The best option is to find a SCT dealer near you and get a dyno/wideband tune. That way you get the base Focus tune optimized to your setup, not to a mail-order template.

I found out about the software after I bought just the xcal, and I started to wish I got that instead. But once i datalogged my car and found out theres really nothing to change, alll was good.

The only problem with the template fuel table is it usuallly runs rich at idle/low load and theres a bit of fuel knock on cold starts if you stab the throttle.

Well, we decided to not get the pro-racer package (for now?). I don't think my area (St.Louis) has an SCT dealer. Or even any 'tuners' for that matter (I have not seriously looked however). I have a somewhat different intake setup with the ram-air, and the wife wants to get rid of the 'hanging rev' issue which Tom said he could fix as well. So looking forward to getting the focus dialed in by Xmas.

Well if you were to get a mail-order tune, Tom's is probly the way to go.

I know theres a shop in Springfield IL that is in the process of rebuilding someone's SVT, so they probly have the duratec's base tune too. Not too bad of a drive for you. lemme know if you need/want contact info.
