If it's just a beater, why bother? It will probably cost you what you paid for the car. Just spend your money and your time on the FoFo while you have it off the road.

The EGT wasnt a bad car - it got the 130hp Mazda twincam from the Miata of the same year, as I recall. I'd do some research and see if they used the same trans as either the other Escorts (which would still be the IB5, wouldnt it?) or it maybe they used the Protege trans. The unit should be cheap from a junk yard, actually getting it to work might be a little more complicated.

I wouldn't bother w/ the swap, just look harder for a manual or live w/ the auto. Escorts of that vintage are predisposed to bad valve bodies in the trans... if it slips, forget it! (or have a tranny shop replace the valve bodies, seals, o-rings, ect. but that'll cost more than the car)

My GT had 186,000+ miles when I traded it and the ATX was as tight as the day I bought it. Regular maintenance, that's the key.

That's possible since alot of ppl don't maintain their cars like they should anymore, and I had one w/ a bad auto trans, but it was slipping ever so slightly when I bought it. Once they start to slip, you've got 15k or less until its toast.

im asking about the swap because i want the car to be my rally x car, but maybe the ATX its not to bad, i can wait to see it, probably i gonna sell my mystique next week and get extra money for mods on the escort, but lets see how this deal works out, i spoke to the guy and he said that the car its pretty solid, just needs some attention on the breaks, but i would take it to the shop as soon as i get it... about the focus... im thinking in just leave it stock, the only thing i gonna be getting its a tune from tom this xmas because its gonna be my "nice" car (rare)... next year if everything works out im planning to add a volvo C30 to my garage...
