Here's my conspiracy theory

Ford will discontinue the focus. This isn't one of those 08 bashing threads. I just noticed a trend. Ok, the escort ran for many years with a hatch. Then the hatch was discontinued and eventually the model. MAYBE, Ford is looking at a new car in the next 5 years or so to replace the Focus and is just testing new technology in a revised, pre-existing platform to see if people buy it? I'm sure this has been touched upon before, but I'm curious to see what you guys think.

I've heard about the Fiesta looking ride supposedly coming to America, but that would leave a void for that car segment which I doubt Ford would do. I'm not up on all the concepts out there and potential inside information, but it sounds reasonable right?

They may discontinue the name brand, but there are other compacts/sub-compacts that Ford may always offer us in the future. The Fiesta is just one of many possibilities that many people have been discussing. Personally the name/badge doesn't matter to me. If they manage to surprise us with the next best hatchback I'll be just as happy.

I don't think anyone should lose sleep over the Focus brand. With the direction it's headed right now, can any of you really consider it a Focus anymore? There's very little left of what European roots it had. They stripped nearly all of the characteristics that made the brand fun and attractive to us when we first bought it. That's all done and over with.

So carrying that name over with the continued uglification of the American version will simply make the Focus something along the lines of what the Taurus has become today. They might as well should've discontinued the Focus briefly and then re-slapped the badge onto something different. The final product would've been the same either way.

I hope and believe that the 08 Focus is just a stop-gap between the first gen (C170) and third generation model, which is planned to debut in 09 as a 2010 model. I think the 08 Focus is kinda like the Mazda Escorts that were only around a couple of years between the boxy Escort and the Focus.

Will Ford keep the Focus name on the new car? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on how the 08 Focus is received. Personally, I think it's a decent car, and it deserves as much respect as a Sentra and more respect than a Cobalt.

The '08 Focus isn't a complete failure by any means, but to give it the Focus badge sort of makes it a travesty. It's the reason why so many toes are being stepped on here, for long-time Focus fans who would've expected something very different from what we have today. Essentially most people don't even see a Focus there anymore. It's not a bad car, but it's not a Focus either. Ford still has time to redeem itself by offering another Focus-like car from one of its other brands, however. Or so I'd like to think...

Right on with all that.

I, for one, am going to stop bashing - or even paying attention to anything about - the new Focus here. Just a complete waste of time. I'm really only interested in info, mods, tips, problems, etc. about the SVT and, to some extent, other MKI Foci - it's definitely great to see some of the awesome things people are doing to/with them on this forum.

As for the direction of this thread, I wrote it elsewhere and I'll write it again: I don't know what's more stupid - our expecting loyalty from a giant car company (or any other corporation), or our SHOWING loyalty to one.

The MKI Focus was a cool-ass car. One and done.

I would agree with your statements. The '08 is just coming out so it's too early to predict it's future sales success...obviously all that Ford is concerned with at this point.I work for Ford and even I am clueless as to what's in the pipeline.I do see more Mazda influence in the coming years and I don't know that that's such a bad thing.I do think however that the days of "enthusiasts" and "Focus" in the same sentence are long gone...

The '09 mazda3 will be on the global focus C1 platform, will undoubtedly have a HUGE aftermarket and with a 2.5L powerplant, have a lot of potential.

SCREW the focus. The mk1 is a legend, always will be a eye-catching econobox with a lot of heart. The SVT version was a nice touch until ford layed off basically the entire SVT department. The new focus looks like ass, no hatch? See ya.

See you guys on the mazda forums LOL!

It wouldn't be the first that ford has done this sort of thing. The only reason name changes were made in like around 2004 was to see if using the same parts used in previous era cars would impact on it name changing.

And still from this day, Ford of america is not even trying to keep up with europe's focus model; and there not even trying, and really they don't care.

Changing the name back to the escort would only mean that it would have to reestablish it honor like the last 10-15 years ago when escorts were popular.

I believe it wouldn't make any difference for a name change, then most people wonder what the crap happened to the name focus.
