2009 Ford Escort

It is my sincere hope that, after the inevitable year of dismal sales of the 2008 Focus, Ford will continue its recent baffling and insecure practice of renaming its models in the vain hope that doing so will actually fool SOMEBODY.

Hence - just as the 500 became the Taurus, the Zephyr became the MKZ, the Freestyle became the Taurus X (hah hah), and the Montego became the Sable - the bastard-child 2008 Focus will be renamed the Escort. After all, it LOOKS like the evolution of the Escort (the US Escort, at least), and certainly isn't worthy of the name Focus.

Then, hopefully, the Focus will make a glorious return in 2010 as a desirable, hot-looking, world-class, European-designed conveyance to knock our socks off.

Or not.

Why not...keep the escort but chop some of that outragious price on it. Move the focus upmarket...the people in europe will be happy cause the focus is already an upmarket car compared to the one here. And we'll be happy cause we'll get a better focus, with better quality. And who knows thatll allow them to justify the price of a performance focus like the ST thats priced around 22k and maybe they can throw some awd on the focus with it being in that price range.

The only people who will be unhappy are the people who like buying a focus cause its really cheap and will mod the hell outta it, and who want to keep the focus small and light. Which I dont think the focus will get that much bigger or heavier anyway.

But idk if this will work. The zephyr changed cause it didnt fit in with the other number, letter names in the lincoln line up. The 500 on the other hand just changed to try to boost sales. But when they changed it the 500 name was gone. I think it would be kinda odd to have this 08 focus then change the name to escort and then have a totally new focus come. Idk its just wierd.

Well the 08's does resemble the escort.... well actually to me it looks like a Tempo... strangly..

But it would... and wouldn't make sence at the same time, get this.

The name focus was used for 9 year's... so far.
the name escort was used for 18 years (not including the zx2 escorts).

And theres 2 things,
1) Seniority
2) The time that the escort and the taurus saved ford's ass.

The 2003 Escort (the last model year) came with the 2.3L motor (if not the 2.3 it did produce 150hp) and trick clutch, exhaust and a bunch of other cool stuff.

Hopefully the new focus/escort can have some of those options...

I was just being facetious about all this, but I just can't come to terms with the fact this is the new FOCUS (here, at least). And Ford's complete LACK of focus with all this renaming has been comical, if not downright depressing...

And - gasp! - you're right, DURATECoftheDesert, it DOES evoke the damned Tempo!

Ford is definitely trying to save itself from bankruptcy. They have all these management meetings, hire all these marketing guys and for what? Why don't they just listen to the consumers and stop producing crap people don't really want. Didn't Ford just have another billion+ dollar loss? Ford finally gets it right occasionally and makes a kick ass version of a car, and it lasts a couple years and BYE-BYE.

Its a good theory, but I don't think it'll happen.

For starters, they changed the 500 to the Taurus because of the historical significance of the Taurus name; it was the car that pulled Ford out of the trouble they were in back in the late 80s/early 90s. So call it a placebo for the upper management, a throwback to the "good old days" if you will. Not to mention, the Taurus was regarded as a decent family sedan so they're undoubtedly hoping to cash in on name recognition. The Escort, on the other hand...outside of the enthusiast community, it is remembered as a ho-hum compact commuter. The Focus has a decent reputation from the 2000-4 models, and to a lesser extent the '05-07, so they'll almost undoubtedly stick with the Focus name for the two or three years the third-generation C170 based model sells here (assuming we actually do get the MkIII here in 2010-11.)
