cluster swapping scam???

my buddy told me this one, he said a buddy of his traded in a foci with 145k on it. but he got a cluster from the junkyars that had like 45k on it, he said he got like 2-3 times more than what it is worth. has anybody heard of this???
i would think the dealer would sync it up to the ecm first, but who knows maybe this is a well known trick?

in cali if you do something like that it'll show up on your carfax history and when you go to get a smog check or something your car will be flagged for "possible odometer rollback". Dealer's in cali usually check carfax and if they see incorrect odo reading or anything like that you'll get zilch. also if you get caught for rolling back your odo here you can face serious legal consequences.

but then again cali = the worst place to live if you like cars so maybe the policy is different in other states.

yeah but if u put like mega miles on your car in 2 yrs lets say u bought it with 35k and u now have like 110k on it and u go out and buy a cluster wit 60k on it, there is no way carfax or anybody can tell. i think u would have to be a retard to buy a car with 35k and yrs later get a cluster with 33k. lol

from what a ford tech told me, it's not hard to detect at all if someone becomes even slightly suspicious.
the cluster has the cars vin encoded in it and the ecu also keeps the correct milage. so he says....
trust him, but can't say this is all true...

Yeah dealers always report vehicle milage and some inspection places do too, and not just in Cali. I gues you would have to check your carfax before doing this and not go under what was last reported

also this is a SERIOUSLY ileagal thing to do, anytime you change the ODO and don't tell the perosn you sell it to is federal crime I believe

all any ford garage has to do is type in the vin. it'll bring up the service records for any time it has been in any ford garage. when any work is done the milage is also reported. so there is also a record out there that way too
