What I Drive: 1995 Chevy Beretta

Cool Time to buy a Focus...

Evening. I'm a 17-year-old, basically unemployed high-school peon living in Pennsylvania ... my present vehicle is a 1995 Chevrolet Beretta that seems to have had some unfortunate run-ins with Satan in its past, judging from the insane nature of the problems that it has. For instance, it is completely impossible to align the car; no matter how you aim the wheels, it pulls to the right after a maximum of two or three weeks. Also, the speedometer doesn't really like to indicate the speed at which the car is actually moving, preferring instead to represent maybe the speed of an epileptic hummingbird's wings: when I sit at a red light, it indicates random speeds from 30 miles an hour up to and past 120.

More importantly, it's got an "economy-class" automatic transmission... and a tranny swap is out of the question because GM never felt the need to pair that engine with a 5-speed. I don't need to get into custom fabbing; it'd cost more than the car. Also, the computer's governor limits it to 108 MPH, and there's no simple way chip to fix that.

So I think it's time to trade in the Beretta... Basically I'm looking at Foci (Focuses?) for maybe 7-8k at most. I'm pretty sure I want a Zetec-engined car and it needs to be a manual, so I guess that means I'm looking at ZX3's and ZTS's... ZX5's too, maybe? I'm not sure. The SVT is most likely out.

Anyhow, what are the big differences between the ZX3 and the ZTS? Which years did they make big changes? What kinds of things tend to go wrong in these cars so that I can check them on the cars? What kind of fuel efficiency can you expect, practically? Little things like that... or if anyone has any miscellaneous tidbits that would be good to know.

And am I going to miss my current 170 HP a lot?... until I turbocharge the Focus, of course. (I doubt I'll miss the extremely confused looks on my mechanic's face when he looks under the hood of the Beretta.)

Thanks for slogging through this post... Hopefully I don't get flamed off the boards right away, ha. I've got a handful of little questions but they matter less right now.

Welcome aboard. The ZX3 is the 3-door hatchback and the ZTS is the 4-door sedan. They both have the same Zetec engine. You should be able to find a Focus for $7-8K without any problem. My advice is to get a '02 or newer.

That's really funny. Oh and to let you know, the focus has a speed limiter at 108 too.

Hmm. At least with the Focus, I believe there are chips available such as DiabloSport to correct that little 108 MPH oversight; am I right?

hotfocus, why would you recommend an 02+? What happened to make those different cars?

Thanks again, everyone

new cars suck...remember he is 17!!! insurance rapes us 17 year olds. And look at the value of a new focus, and then look at the value of a used focus (2003).. He also has no way to support his payments on a new car because he said he has no job. thus he has been saving his money (besides what the bretta nickle and dimed out of him) so he could drop that thing like a hogie at a homeless shelter. I would say that the 2003 2.3L would be your best bet for get up and go with out svt. But the only bad thing is they mooved the 2.3L away from the focus and into the escape and other cars so there is a short aftermarket for them. Hope all this helps.

i drive an LX with an SPI engine (the lowest of all) and i am happy with the car. sometimes i wish i had gone with a zetec, but when i am being taken advantage of at the gas pump, i take comfort in my 35mpg average.

and i am just fine with my 108 mph top speed. i have never hit that, and i do not plan on it. i know going fast is cool, and all that, but its just not worth the risk, IMO.
